To my knowledge, you only need the cd for the video stuff. I haven't had it ask for the cd just for playing against the program. Perhaps too for the database access for the millions of games they include with the program.

Sort:
Two types of cache:
1. Motherboard, no less than L2 and preferably L3 cache that ranges from 8 to 16MB.
2. Disk cache; go for 8 to 16MB.
In modern systems, the cache is on the CPU die.
Level 2 ("L2") is "better" than L3 (smaller but faster).
Irrespective of level, the larger the amount (MBytes), the better.
