Omg, the chess set envy is real.

I don't have anything nice right now, but I was hoping to treat myself to a nice board for christmas. I have always LOVED soviet style sets, but I don't have the type of money to buy a vintage set.

Would you have any suggestions for somewhere to look for a reasonably priced soviet style (or similar) set? I'm looking to not break $150, if that's even possible.

Thanks.

T, check Etsy. You can find some incredibly good buys there. I've bought a number of sets in the Retro Russia shop there. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Wow, I am pleasently suprised. Thanks a ton, I didn't even think about etsy.

Great! Let us know if you find something you like!

Those sets are nice. The knights look like fighters. goodknightmike, the thin stems on the bishops really make their mitres stand out. Very nice all around, guys.

By the way, when your Soviet sets have missing finials, do you replace them yourselves or recruit the services of Alan Dewey?

I've cannibalized them from other sets or retained Alan.

Thanks UpcountryRain, Alan makes all the  replacement finials that I need. Right now I have Soviet pieces in Alan's shop for repairs including some needing finials

Thanks Chuck, your set pics are wonderful. What's the scoop on your beautiful Koopman clock?

cgrau

Thanks, Mike, yo're very welcome. I don't have it here with me now, but the Koopman dates from the mid-sixties. It's the larger of two versions, reknowned for its quality. I picked it up from a Dutch vendor on Ebay. I'll post some pics when I get a moment.
