This new edition sounds very exciting; will be eagerly awaiting reviews.
FYI: Reassess your chess 4th ed

The first announcement I saw regarding the fourth edition of the book said it would be out at the end of 2007. I have been eagerly awaiting the 4th edition for over 2 years!
Presumably the extra time that's going into preparing the book means extra quality.

The fourth edition is coming up already? Wow. I just purchased the third edition and am in the process of reading it. Well, can't wait for the next one in the series!

So this means I should burn my copy of the 3rd edition?
Yes! Everything in the 3d edition is probably refuted in the 4th ed.

This is one of the best chess books written and I am going to buy the 4th edition when it comes out if Jeremy is saying it is completely redone. I like the workbook even better...perhaps a great puzzle book on positional undersatnding of chess. The workbook is short of like chess mentor problems.
I cannot wait for the 4th edition.

I have Silman's 3rd edition of Reassess Your Chess. It is sadly sitting on my bookshelf. I hear great things about it. (Maybe the 4th will be lots better.)
But everyone tells me to wait as my rating at 1037 precludes me from understanding the morsals from Heaven that Mr. Silman drops.
So as much as I would like to partake of his gift to us, I guess I must wait. How long?????

Thanks for the prompt response, farbror. I think that Mr. Silman teaches/coaches here on chess.com. Do you know if there's any way to contact him via this site?

You can email questions to Mr Silman. I emailed him about the 4th ed but no response. His email adress should be somewhere on his weekly chess column for the site.

Good idea, fabror. I just sent Mr. Silman a message on his chess.com Profile. I told him that I'd convey his response to this thread; so I'll be back if/when I hear from him. Talk to ya soon.

Dear All:
Please see below my correspondence with Mr. Silman regarding the publish date for 4th ed. (Read up from the bottom.)

Thank you so much for taking the time to write back to me. I understand the pressure you're under, and if I may say so, we your readers are deeply grateful for the effort and dedication that you're devoting to this important project. Good luck, and hope to see you around on chess.com.

Dear Mr. Shpizner,
Sadly, the book is taking longer than I anticipated. Keep in mind that I've literally thrown the old version away and am writing the new Reassess from scratch with all new examples, new ideas and concepts, and many completely new chapters (I'll be covering things never before discussed in a chess book).
Since people expect me to give them something new, instructive, entertaining, and special, I want this book to live up to expectations. However, it's extremely complicated (I'm trying to make it suitable for players in the 1200 to 2100 range) and thus is very, very late.
I'm hoping to get it out by the end of the year (I'm working nonstop on it!), but if that doesn't come to pass, then certainly by the beginning of 2010.
Please feel free to share this information, and thanks for asking!
Sincerely,
Jeremy Silman

Hello, Mr. Silman. I heard a while ago (from a Forum discussion here at chess.com) that the 4th ed. should be coming out soon. Can you please provide an update? I'll be happy to convey your comments to the Forum thread. Thanks very much! Regards, ibiwisi (Michael Shpizner)
"Dear Mr. Öhagen,
Feel free to share this with anyone interested in the book:
4th edition of HOW TO REASSESS YOUR CHESS (due out mid 09): Every example has been thrown away, whole chapters are gone, and new ideas are offered. A complete, 100% rewrite!
Actually, I felt that I had gone “off point” far too often in the 3rd edition of REASSESS. Thus, I am removing anything that doesn’t promote the training and mastery of the imbalances, making it far more instructive, and giving far more guidance. But everything will be about imbalances and how to recognize and make use of them.
In a way, you can view it as complementary to the 3rd edition ... But I think it will go a long way towards helping people fully integrate my idea of imbalances. In fact, it’s more of an imbalance study book ... It gives you the opportunity to put a lot of work into it and, hopefully, get a lot back.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Silman"
