Does anyone know why Garde Chess clocks are so hard to get hold of in the uk ? Is it Covid or brexit or something else ?
KnightsForkCafe

I believe that they are no longer being produced. eBay might be one option to acquire one.

Also try lion chess. They are reporting that they have one. They are a UK company.

@MarshallBillington, there are three generations of this clock (see pictures below on the characteristic features). As far as I am aware, only the first two were fully made in Germany, while the third generation was made with cheaper clockworks from China. The recommendable ones are therefore clearly the first and second generation clocks. I have a nice example of a first generation clock on my website.

First generation Gardé clocks are hard to come by, but I am based in Germany and if you want, I can try to source a second generation clock for you.

Thanks for responding with interesting information. I’ve now managed to get one.

I purchased this clock earlier today; snapped it up online - offering a price to a local seller. It turns out the gent was an interesting and passionate German Go player - a computer scientist by trade - returning to his home town of Hannover. The clock was purchased years ago when he lived back home in Germany and then it came with him to Australia. He had little interest in chess but he used the clock to play Go. While I’m glad I got it - quality analog clocks seem hard to find - it seems from Holger’s note above that even though it says “Made in Germany”, perhaps the internal parts are of lessor quality than older Garde clocks?
I will say it’s made like a tank, every part of it feels solid, Whether true of not - the good man selling it said that such clocks are given quite a belting back in his homeland. Anyway - I’m happy to have it and so was he - I find passionate players seem to want their kit to go to other passionate people - it’s not always about the cash. This one will come to the pub with me when I play my friends for sure.

Oh, that’s good to know. Mine certainly seems well made and as your pictures helpfully show - mine is Made in Germany not - as your pictures note ‘Engineered’ in Germany … that’s said, from Holger’s post above - perhaps mine being third generation has some Chinese parts … as opposed two the earlier models which may have been completely German.

Not sure. One day I might unscrew the wooden back and have a deeper look at the mechanics.

I am quite delighted with the pick up - even if analog clocks are relic of yesteryear. Thanks for posting the different version.

Congrats Powder! It is a nice clock regardless of the generation. I just love the look of Garde clocks.

@Powderdigit I actually think these last gen Made in Germany clocks make good clocks for regular play. Since they are newer than the old ones, they tend to be internally cleaner and in better working order. The older Garde clocks are a bit nicer, but often don't work as well due to age/use. I only wish the newer ones didn't have the stupid plastic clock bezel. If they had a metal one they'd be perfect.

I must say, the plastic bezel is an odd choice - and does make the appearance less refined than it otherwise could be. Perhaps it was a cost saving measure before production event to China?

I never noticed the plastic bezel on the 3rd generation before today. I just looked at my first gen and it has what looks like a metal bezel. I have not opened up the clock so I am not sure if the bezel is actually metal or plastic. I agree with Powder in that the 3rd gen does not look as refined as the first 2 generations, but still it has that classic look with the wooden case and analog clocks.

Nice to see the Mexicans again! B'twixt papier mache horsemen, time rides Guard's ultralight velo. A go player might prefer a haiku. Papier mache guys/ crackle hoof horsing around/ plastiline bezels. Bezel seems of French origin, something from gem sculpting. Bezel translates to German as Lünette, which must be the same word in singular as the French word for specs, lunettes (little moons). German Brille is an old plural of beryl, like glasses, just more specific. I like your historical way of collecting by sealing your deals in person. Happy playing with your Garde, hope it is a soothing ship, like mine.

Thanks folks. It is in very good working order. Although it is unlikely to be used for a game. More a display item.
