Getting Chessmaster 9000 to Work in Windows 10

Starting a thread to document attempts at getting Chessmaster 9000 installed in Windows 10...

(EDIT on Feb 3, 2021) - For later readers of this thread, the cause of the problem was found to be the Setup.exe file on most versions of Disc 1 of CM9000. Most versions of Setup.exe are copy-protected, and Windows 10 has dropped support for this copy-protection. My Disc 1 just happens to have an earlier version of Setup.exe that isn't copy-protected. @sangahm was the one who found the solution, which is discussed in Posts # 149 through 151, and in 186 & 190.

I just recently installed Chessmaster 9000 in my Windows 10 box, although I haven't used it to verify that all features are working. I made several posts in the following thread related to the installation, but I thought it would be better to start a new thread so that the information didn't remain hidden in the previous thread:

In this thread: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-books-equipment/chessmaster-10th-edition-not-working-on-window-10-25646574

@Nimzowitts mentioned that he had previously tried to install CM 9000 into Windows 10, but that not all of the features worked for his installation.

So, that's the background - I expect @Nimzowitts to be along shortly, and we'll probably start with a discussion of which features aren't working for him; Then I can check my install to see if I'm any better off than he is.

Ok I found my CM 9000 Cd. Bummer! I disabled my AV and attempted to run compatibility mode (win XP) for the Setup.exe folder. No Joy! I used to at least be able to install the program on Windows 10 But no longer. I blame Microsoft updates. Further. I enabled legacy feature in the 'turn windows features on or off' box. Still no joy. Further I enabled the 'Legacy ' feature from the 'turn window features on or off' box. No joy ther either.

Is your CM 9000 just one CD? Mine was a two-CD set in a jewel box, put out by Ubisoft. I'm trying to remember - I think when I put Disk 1 in the CD drive, the autorun program just started the CM 9000 Install window. I don't think I ever had to click on any setup.exe file.

Also, I didn't actually have to disable my AV for CM 9000. I did for CM 10, but not CM 9000. (Although I guess it wouldn't hurt anything either way.)

And I don't remember having to fiddle with any compatibility settings for files or folders.

Btw, are you running Win 10 Pro or Home?

Nimzowitts

Lucky you. How recent was that? Yes mine is an original CM 9000 CD. I just get the set up splash screen clik install and then NADA.

Nimzowitts

Administrator rights applied.

Nimzowitts

I be running windows 10 home.

EscherehcsE

You're using Win 10 Home; I'm using Pro - although I'd hope that that doesn't matter.

One other thing worth mentioning - I actually ran the installation *in* my admin account - it may not be enough just to apply admin rights?

I have 2 CDs. Copyright 2002 by Ubisoft Entertainment. There are no other distributor names on the disks - only Ubisoft.

EscherehcsE

I'm running Build 1909 (I don't like being a guinea pig, lol). I hope that it's not a case of a recent build breaking something...

Nimzowitts

I suspect the windows update to be at fault. Yeah I have 2 CDs. I am logged in as administrator as routine.

Nimzowitts

BTW. Hacker Honors to anyone who can get Power Chess running. I loved that program!

Not really a good idea, but we won't go there today, lol.

I actually bought a used copy a while back, but I don't know why I did it. I've never tried to install it. Usually, if it's designed for Win 95, I'm not really interested. Maybe one of these days I might attempt an installation.

Nimzowitts

Perhaps but I have not been hacked yet!

EscherehcsE

Yeah, when you clicked on "Install", something should have happened. That's not encouraging; We might have hit a brick wall, idk. I guess all we can do is mull over the situation for a bit. I guess doing a fresh Win 10 install on a different box or a spare hard drive is out of the question?

EscherehcsE

Keep an eye on the "Software Chess Simulators" thread (link in the OP). @66mhz is running Win 10 Enterprise and has ordered a copy of CM 9000. Maybe he'll post whether he gets it installed or not.

EscherehcsE

Maybe try disabling the firewall instead of or in addition to the AV? I didn't have to do any of that with my build, but who knows about the newer builds?

...or buy an old Windows 7 PC at a garage sale for 20 bucks...lol.

Nimzowitts

Indeed. Buying an old computer is the complete solution. Howevers since I once had CM 9000 installed years ago I have to assume it can be done. Ah well...

EscherehcsE

Btw, which Win 10 build are you using?
