Gigantic DOS chess package

Franz Huber has outdone himself again. In this package comes almost all versions of the most popular DOS chess games of the past, and you can choose either DOS Box or QEMU to run them under. QEMU is much faster. Just download the package, unzip, run either the DOS Box or QEMU executable, type CHESS at the prompt, hit Enter, and off you go.

17 versions of Rebel, 27 versions of MChess, multiple versions of many others, including Fritz, Chessmaster, Hiarcs, Sargon, Chess System Tal, etc.

Go to https://c.gmx.net/@317206859884790529/2tABpF1yRAi4VOpH7McHFw and download the one called Chess_DOS_VM_Collection.

I try download it and then mount the image to use it, it says that it is corrupted.

Don't mount anything. Just run either the Dosbox or QEMU batch file.

Have you got it working now @sleazymate?

sleazymate

Yes thanks

IpswichMatt

Are you on Windows 10? Did you use DOSbox or QEMU?

sleazymate

I used the Dosbox batch file which comes with the download, it automatically loads Dosbox then in that directory you type chess and the menu pops up with all the options

IpswichMatt

thanks, I'll give it a go

It's a collection of old chess software from the 80s and 90s, together with a DOS simulator so that you can run them from a PC

Enjoying the old style graphics, really nice collection of software.

I am having problems getting sound to work on some of the games such as Battle Chess 2000 and Fritz 3. Does anyone know what sound setting to put in DosBox so that the sound works on the majority of these games?

Usually I use the set up utility that usually comes with DOS games. The prominent use for my DosBox is BlueByte’s Settlers (used the set up utility for sound) and QBasic that uses PC buzzer.

Thanks in Advance.

Apologies for resurrecting such an old thread (and for such old software!) but the original link is dead and I would really like to get that collection of chess programs. Is there any other link around? I have been looking for a while but did not find anything yet.

Thanks!

Try this site and look for Chess-DOS-VirtualMachine:

If you are into chess machines of the 80s and 90s, also check out CB-Emu_Pro (Chess Computer Emulator) . This fantastic emulator is able to mimic the behaviour as well as the look of a lot of old chess machines like the Mephistos, the Fidelities, the Novags, the Saiteks, etc.

last link still works but it was downloading so slowly that i had enough time to play it from other souruce and find out it plays illegal moves. also tried some random chat gpt website but it was even more awful like playing illegal move every 5th move on average for example saying axb6 while moving f pawn to b5...
