Hi there.

I'm new to chess, and have had the same problem of which books to choose. I was recommended by a friend this book: " logical chess move by move " by Irving Chernev and so I had a look and decided to buy it. It's a bit slow at first as it describes various games in detail , but I am finding it really useful in terms of tactics and positional play. Hope this helps. As a beginner who doesn't belong to a club, it is difficult finding ways to improve, but yeah the book really helps.

thanks....i already have logical chess. it is a amazing book!

DanMac1

Yeah, it is. I'm kinda having the same problem. There are so many books on chess to choose from! For now, I'm just going to progress my way through logical chess and see where that takes me. I hope you find what you're looking for .

Chess Structures - A Grandmaster Guide by GM Mauricio Flores Rios (2015)
"There is also masses of stuff in the book that made me go 'Oooh!' and 'Aaah!' so I think it will have the same effect on you! In particular, I loved Rios' exposition of White's plan of exerting queenside pressure against Hedgehog systems. I'd seen one of the games he quotes in his chapter but I'd never remotely made any link to a structured way of fighting the Hedgehog structure, so this chapter was a real eye-opener for me ...
In conclusion, warmly recommended. Lots to learn!" - GM Matthew Sadler
The Power of Pawns by GM Jörg Hickl (2016)
"The didactic concept of the book is admirable. Each chapter defines the structures, explains the typical characteristics and shows the plans for both White and Black. The reader participates by assessing positions and invariably receives useful tips for practical play." - FM Harry Schaack

It is no use for beginners to read a positional/strategy books.

Can you explain your reason please?

DanMac1

Personally I don't really know what I am. I would class myself as a beginner as I don't belong to a club and have been fascinated by chess for about a month now, but I have a little knowledge be it not a lot on the way the  game works ie center control, pawn structure ecetera. Also, I really want to improve.

The following is a list of good chess books suitable for those who have not yet added "Master" to their chess title...

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/good-chess-books-for-beginners-and-beyond

There are many titles in the list which address issues of concern to you...

In particular for those just beginning to learn about positional chess concepts, I recommend...

"Weapons of Chess" by Bruce Pandolfini......

https://www.amazon.com/Weapons-Chess-Omnibus-Strategies-Fireside/dp/0671659723/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1483395376&sr=1-1&keywords=weapons+of+chess

It is addressed specifically to the beginner-intermediate chess player audience and introduces the basic elements upon which positional chess technique is built...a nice thing about the book (aside from the fact that used copies are cheap) is that you can read the chapters in essentially any order as the topics inspire you....but it is important to go through the entire book...which should not be all that difficult for intelligent chess players such as yourselves...!

Note - the Yaroslav Srokovski book, shown in the OP's initial post, would be more accessible for lower rated players, and be a suitable follow-on, after first absorbing the basic, fundamental elements and concepts presented in Pandolfini's "Weapons..."

DanMac1

wow. I can't say how grateful I am. I didn't start this forum, but that link is so helpful. I think I shall start investing in some of those books  ready for when I've finished logical chess. I definitely agree with what you said about the master in the title. Those ones do sound a little too confusing for me.

RussBell

I created the list to feature quality, instructive books that are accessible primarily to those who are below Expert or Master level - books that the average improving amateur chess player can comprehend and readily benefit from.  The books were written by some of the most highly regarded chess authors.

Often, the recommendations offered by Experts and above are for books that are targeted and suited to the more advanced player.  That is, books which are not particularly useful or easily comprehendible to those who have not yet attained the more lofty heights of chess knowledge and skill...

"The fact is that chess consists of [the three elements, force, space, and time] plus the inherent element of position, and position is first, last, and foremost." - near the beginning of The Middle Game chapter of J. R. Capablanca's A Primer of Chess
