Understanding Chess Tactics by Martin Weteschnik was good.
Simple Chess by Stean is one of my favorite chess books.
Also, Chess Endings: Essential Knowledge by Averbakh is a classic. Like Stean, it's short and easy to read, which is nice.
NM Dan Heisman's suggested book list: http://home.comcast.net/~danheisman/Events_Books/General_Book_Guide.htm
