My favorite book that I wish I would have read early on was The Amateurs Mind by Silman. After learning the raw basics this book is awesome. Also if you go to - Read -at this sites toolbar you will see Daily Columns where Mr Silman just wrote a fantastic story for beginners. The article has great hands on examples!  Also check out the free website  chesswebsite.com . This site is amazing. It  has everything from the raw basics to semi- in depth story and video explanations! Check it out and welcome to the jungle!!

Good Luck

Yes Silman's book is quite simple and easily explained.....I downloaded a chess library consisting of 500 books and articles.....if I'm done them all by 2025 (my 65th birthday) I'll be lucky .....Laughing

  • zeddragonetti8---Skip lightly over Fine's suggestions for an opening repertoire. Study instead his 10 rules for playing the opening.

Irving Chernev's classic: Logical Chess Move by Move.

I would recommend finding a book on tactics. I like Ward Farnsworth's Predator at the Chessboard, although there are many books. His book explains in words what you need to train yourself to look for in each position. Once you learn each basic tactic, you need to drill these patterns into your head. For this purpose, I would recommend trying Chess Tempo.

Always the exprience and feeling of a real book in your hand , is something more fascinating way of learning chess.Meanwhile your eyes will be injured and harmed reading PDFs or ebooks even on the best available screens ! For the best begining start points ; these are the best by order : 1-A complete idiots guide to chess 2-complete comperhensive chess course 1 ,2 (Lev alburt) 3-logical chess move by move ( chernev) 4-Every one's second chess book (Dan Heisman) 5-Bobby Fischer teachs chess 6- Chess for dummies 7-play winning chess (Seiravan) 8 -Fundamental chess theory (illia Mayzelis)
