Yes Silman's book is quite simple and easily explained.....I downloaded a chess library consisting of 500 books and articles.....if I'm done them all by 2025 (my 65th birthday) I'll be lucky .....
Good book for learning chess

- zeddragonetti8---Skip lightly over Fine's suggestions for an opening repertoire. Study instead his 10 rules for playing the opening.

I would recommend finding a book on tactics. I like Ward Farnsworth's Predator at the Chessboard, although there are many books. His book explains in words what you need to train yourself to look for in each position. Once you learn each basic tactic, you need to drill these patterns into your head. For this purpose, I would recommend trying Chess Tempo.

My favorite book that I wish I would have read early on was The Amateurs Mind by Silman. After learning the raw basics this book is awesome. Also if you go to - Read -at this sites toolbar you will see Daily Columns where Mr Silman just wrote a fantastic story for beginners. The article has great hands on examples! Also check out the free website chesswebsite.com . This site is amazing. It has everything from the raw basics to semi- in depth story and video explanations! Check it out and welcome to the jungle!!
Good Luck
