Hello,
In the magnus documentary, he plays with a wood version.
I had a plastic version but I didn't like it too much, nevertheless a wood one can be interesting. Do you know if someone sells one?

I just ordered thechessstore.com Guardian Series set in Camel and Black. Hope it was worth it. I know that they have discontinued their Rogue and Crown Series. Chess House has a Rogue alternative called Emisario. The only thing different are the Rooks but the rest of the set is Rogue all the way. As for the Crown alternative. Legend Products sells a set called the Algeria Staunton. To me this is an exact copy of the Crown Series. You can still get these sets if you are wanting them.
I have both sets in ivory and camel they are beautiful and very durable, matched here with a 2" square notation and logo mahogany and maple board from the HOS. Perfect fit and quite nice look and feel to the set. You will not be disappointed with your purchase, this I'm sure of...enjoy your new set for years to come.
Another view of the Guardian set from the chess store. I made a mistake when storing the set in a tournament sized chess bag that can carry a full set of chessmen, a clock and rollup board. Since I don't usually travel with a chess clock I used the middle pouch designated for the clock to store the set in a cloth pull string bag. It was a bit of tight fit and apparently I cracked in two pieces one of the black bishops of the set. The other pouches had another plastic set in them. I contacted the chess store and Greg said he would send me another bishop no problem with an additional order I had placed with him. I've had a good experience with the customer service over there no complaints. One thing I saw was about a doubling in price for their "Chess Store" logo tournament bags. It was explained to me that those bags are larger with more capacity for bigger sets. I guess they were referring to their top of the line plastic sets. In any event I'm ok with what I currently have on hand.
That is a cool looking set. A bit crowded on 2 inch squares but none the less it is a nice looking set. Chess sets are like crack to me. Just can't have one. As I go along in getting sets. I once in a while either sell one or donate one to a friend. I donated a chess set to a Vets outreach coffee house. They really enjoyed the donation. It was a Zagreb 59 set I donated to them.

I agree, when you begin collecting chess sets, wood, plastic or otherwise one tends to get into the addictive consensus of the mind and it seems you're never satisfied with your current collection. As to the crowded condition on my board, it's not an issue at all I guess the angle is a bit skewed but they fit quite nicely. I did a King-Queen and bishop sliding between them test and it passed with this set. None of the pieces were touched by sliding the bishop on its diagonal between the 2 monarchs. Confirmation test used as per Jonas Znidarsic from Best Chessmen Ever Videos on YouTube. That was a very cool gesture to donate a set to the Vet's coffee house, we need more caring individuals who care for those of us who served. Thank you for you kindness sir.
salcero1, first off I want to thank you for your service. Well my Guardian set did arrive. I really like it except for the ears of the knights. Ouchy man they are a deadly weapon. Goin to have to dull those ears a bit. Other than that the set is awesome. I also got their premium vinyl board in red with 2.25" squares. I have to say the red and beige squares really make this set look awesome. I use mailing tubes to store my vinyl chessboards in. Protects them from the elements and causes less memory curling. I roll my vinyl boards along the files and not the ranks. I tend to have a better result in doing this for some reason. It also helps that I shell out a few extra $$$ to get the premium boards. They have little to no memory curling as compared to the China printed vinyl chessboard cheapos. Silicone boards are ok but are a magnet for hairs. Mousepad boards are great except for the bulk. Vinyl boards are my favorite as long as they are the premiums. However solid wood boards are king for me. Love playing on them compared to any other board.
Relating to the mousepad chess boards....there is a new, improved, thinner (1/16 inch) version recently offered Raphael Neff's Chess House and also by Shelby Lorhman's American Chess Equipment (ACE)...

Here is my Guardian Series Plastic Chessmen in Black and Camel on the Premium vinyl chessboard in Red.
I really like how the red squares contrast with the set. The light squares are not bright white which I like. They have a tea or coffee stained color to them. Was hoping to get thechessstore.com Green Premium 2.25" vinyl chessboard but the Red one is a nice fit it seems.
K.F.C. The guardian set looks good against the red and tea hue squares. I agree the knights' ears are a bit pointed and could use some softening with a nail file to prevent injuries during blitz games. I had picked up 2 silicone boards from the HOS but the only gripe I have with those is that they attract hairs like crazy. I have a Jack Russell terrier and an American shorthair cat who both shed like crazy and their shedding tends to float all over the place, a daily cleanup routine I must undertake, but I like the fact that the silicone boards lie completely flat when uncurled form storage.

You might want to check out a relatively recent product - the new, improved, thinner - 1/16 inch - mousepad boards, which can be rolled up or folded (without creasing or wrinkling) for storage and transport. The board will lie completely flat (if rolled & stored with the playing surface OUT).
It's my understanding that these boards don't attract pet hairs like the silicone boards do (I don't own any pets - this is based on forum comments by others who purport to know).

Ha Ha KFC chessboard. Didn't think of that. That is a good one by the way. I use to have an Orange and White chessboard. It looked like the official chessboard of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. I gave it to a friend. I liked the board but I had one old guy who would not play a game on that board. Too bright for his liking I guess.
I just got an e-mail ---->>
Greetings!
