Well... my litlle babies. I love this set and I can't explain Why. Love at first sight ! Historic? Yes, and No. Simple, but a landmark in...

FrankHelwig

uhh, no idea. I see design clues from Viennese sets, also East European design elements. My guess: Hungary.

Looks like a Croatasian/Chechen copy of the Dubrovnik to me. Nice set.

Yes, not easy! This set is rare in USA, Canada, even in Western Europe. It was a popular set in ex - Yugoslavia, and the set of the very well well-known Subotica Tournament for years. I can not say if it was the set of the  World Chess Championship 1987 Subotica Interzonal Tournament ( Sax, Short, Speelman, Tal, Ribli, Smyslov, ans so on).

Yes, Cheaper and simpler, than Dubrovnik, but I don’t agree with that set “flooded the market”. I think that Subozan chess is a evolution of former chess Austro Hungarian chess sets, and If they flooded the market, where are they now?

The folding chess board

I would like more information about this set. Thanks!

Every freaking household in ex Yugoslavia has this set somewhere in the attic.

"If they flooded the market, where are they now?"

Are you serious? I have more than a dozen myself.

If I am not mistaken, I believe a set very similar to these was used in the 1993 Budapest match between Judit Polgar and Boris Spassky.

Just another example of "Staunton is the world standard" being a bit of a myth.

But isn't this still a Staunton design?

I don't like the hats the bishops are wearing.

I wouldn't call it one.  I'm not sure who the authority is on such things, or if there even is one.  But to me it has no cut in the bishop's mitre, no crenellations on the queen, and no king's crucifix finial.  All very important to what made the Staunton standard to begin with.

And it has opposite colored bishop knops, strange 3 collared pawns and bishops, and a scoop necked knight with upturned ears.   All of that adds up to me to being non-Staunton.  You can only diverge so far from a design before it becomes something else.

While I'm not the authority, I would consider that a Staunton set. The design, as with most of the Eastern Europen sets prior to the decline of communism, has had all religious references removed. Still, it's not radically different in the manner of a barleycorn or regency set.

BTW: Izmet Fekali over at Best Chessmen Ever asserts that original Dubrovnik, as opposed to cheap copies, are rare and expensive. In the original sets, only the Bishops had contrasting finneals.
