Has anyone had any problems with used chess software?

I'm thinking of buying a used, older version of Fritz, since it will run on my older computer, and it is only $2. Do you think there likely is something wrong with it at that price? Has anyone bought used software that does not work? Anyone ever bought what they they thought was a factory CD, and it came in the mail and was just a burnt pirated copy?

Two dollars? how serious can it be?

I guess it depends on where you get it.  It could be a pirated copy, or it could be a copy that someone doens't use any more.  I have a copy of Fritz Chess Grandmaster Challenge 2 that I don't use any more and tried to give away at the local chess club, but didn't have any takers.

OK. Sounds good. It sells new for $60, just because not everyone has windows 7 or other newer operating systems. I guess I'll chance it for that price. Shipping is the bulk of the price. I'll be happy if it plays at the expert level as long as I can set up positions and also enter games and have it tell me where my blunders were and at what point each side could have punished them.

You could also download a free client and add a free engine. I've used Chessbase Light in the past, which I was very satisfied with. Not sure if it still exists though (chessbase.com). Together with the free Houdini engine (one of the strongest in the world). You should be set to play over your games and analyse them.

A good chance the Knight's ears are chipped and maybe a second Queen missing...but hey that's what happens when we seek bargains.....

I'd like to download a GUI and an engine, but I don't know if I have the tech skills to install them. I have windows XP. Why do people buy Fritz? Because of the multiple playing strength and the games that come with it? Do most GUI let you do position set up, or enter games to be searched for blunders?
