"heavily weighted" vs "triple weighted"

Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy my first chess set and I was looking at some sets, boards and pieces over at HoS. I noticed that most pieces are described as "heavily weighted" and most people I talked to recommended "triple weighted".

Are they the same thing? Because I was looking for triple weighjted on HoS and could only find plastic pieces (I'm looking for a nice wooden set).

Thankful for any advice on buying my first set =)

Weights are matter of preferences. If you're not sure what you prefer, I'd recommend to go to a local store and try it out first. If you're not able to, then I'd go for a middle ground and go for double weighted.

If I'm not mistaken, triple weight is usually around 1.7kg and double weighted is around 1.2kg.

Disregard all the marketing words (heavily weighted, triple, 4x, etc) and just go by the actual numerical weight of the set in the product descriptions.

2-2.5lbs. Huh. That's decent. Ok, I can work with this.

3-3.5lbs Woah. These feel really nice.

3.75-4lbs. WOW. These pieces are heavy. How much are these?

4.5+ lbs. Dyyaaaaamn... (Large showpiece, display sets.)

Well I don't have a lot of places in my area to try. Its mostly really cheap sets. I'm playing on my couch most of the time so I'd like some heavy pieces. I don't mind if they're "too heavy" to be honest. I doubt theyll get too heavy to lift

I'll keep looking around though, thank you!

Thanks for the advice, thats a good reference grin.png I don't have many places to try so this really helps.

Too heavy pieces cause two real issues:

1. damaged wooden chess boards unless you're playing on mousepad, vinyl or marble tables

2. sprained wrists

Now if the chess pieces are just for display or the occasional fondling of conversation pieces, then have at it!

If I have a choice I would go for a "regular" weight instead of triple weight. In my experience I find it is not necessary to have it. For example World Chess weighted King is 50 grams and CB Dubrovnik King is 82 grams. They're the same 3.75 inches height. I'd rather play with World Chess Set.
