nope

I meant that this thread was started 8 years ago, ended 2 years back (see pg2)

I know it is an old thread but thought would be helpful to post here.

I find the book series "Manual of Chess Combinations" - Chess School 1a, Chess School 1b, Chess school 2 by Sergey Ivashchenko and Maxim Blokh's Chess Tactics book are best for learning tactics.

I finished Chess School 1a and 1b long ago and only finished school 2 few puzzles but the results you can see in your games.

I had horrible 1000 tactics rating once here, and after finishing books and also problems on ChessTempo I achieved 2000, I plan to get past 3000 by next 2 years.

Lots of great recommendations here, over the years.  Since the thread has been bumped, I thought I'd mention Chernev & Reinfeld's "Winning Chess", which is also great for lower level players as an introduction to tactics:

A reading order that worked pretty well for me was:

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess

John Bain's Chess Tactics for Students

Chernev & Reinfeld's Winning Chess

Susan Polgar's Chess Tactics for Champions

Murray Chandler's 2 books (How to Beat Your Dad at Chess / Chess Tactics for Kids)

Farnsworth's website is really great if you like things explained in words (http://www.chesstactics.org/)...

The book is not that relevant. There are several good books for beginners. Important is how to learn the stuff. I recommend to use the program available in Chessable. With Chessable you will at the end memorise all exercises of everybook. It is by far the most efficient way to learn. One good book there is 1000 tactics for beginners. A lot basic stuff, but also some more complex exercises, ideal for people, rated until 1500 in chess.com.

Okay, I've taught chess for over 10 years.  I'm going to wade in here.  For a player under 1000 the books originally considered are too difficult.  The suggestions of Winning Chess Tactics by Seirawan and Silman, Chess Tactics for Students by Bain, and the books by Chandler are all great suggestions.  I'll add the tactics books by Susan Polgar.  What a player at your level needs is a clear explanation and clear examples as well as some positions to practice on.  I've used both the Polgar books and the Chandler books with my students.  The CT-ART 4.0 etc are too advanced.  But the same company produces some software for tactics practice that are aimed at lower rated players and I would recommend.  Good Luck!
