This is my homemade chess board I made recently. Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures but I was using my cell phone to take pictures of it.
It's made from a piece of plywood. It's about 19 1/2" with 2" squares. I cut the board square, then drew the lines on the board using a pencil and a square. Once the lines were on, I cut grooves in the board using my Dremel tool with a small bit and a router attachment. Then I stained the outer edge with a medium stain, then covered the playing surface with masking tape, cut the tape along the grooves, and removed every other piece. I then used an ebony stain to make the dark squares. The grooves cut into the board give it the appearance of being made of inlaid wood.
I then found a cheap but good wooden chess set online which matches the board really well.
The other side of the board I made for playing the game Wahoo, which is a game similar to Sorry and played with marbles and dice.
I drilled the holes in the board using a router. This board is similar to one my dad made probably over 40 years ago, but he painted a red & black checkerboard on his. Since I play chess and not checkers, I decided to make a chess board. I used the same medium stain for the Wahoo side of the board and then painted the red, green, and blue holes. I then covered each side with a satin polyurehtane finish. Not bad for an old piece of plywood.
