Wow I hope they aren't seconds.
HOS Clearance

Cool. Thanks, Eyechess, and finally a reasonable price, about 1/2 off, on all, of the only three of, their sets that interested me.

I was looking for a Liberty set, perfect timing. Getting the rosewood and I hope the color is fairly consistent.

Yeah, I've been watching that page for a while. Some nice stuff has been added lately. A few months ago someone got a great deal on a 4" blood rosewood and boxwood Marshall set. It just had some glue splashes on the bottom edges of the pieces. I'm still kicking myself for not moving faster on that one.
Now HOS has added the Premium Renegade to the clearance sale for $299.50. Better woods on the Premium and a slightly different carving on the knight. The description also says that the Premium comes with two sets of knights, but I see no pictures of the alternate knights. Anyone know more about this set?

I took a look at the description for the Liberty set. Great price, but...All sales are final...No returns...No exchanges...No replacement pieces are allowed.
So you're rolling the dice and agreeing to accept whatever shows up at your door. Considering all of the reports of increased defects in recent years...
No thanks.

Well when I ordered the set that disclaimer was not there. If I got a broken piece and they didn't replace it that would be pretty dumb on their part. I would post from now till doomsday how I got screwed as a set with one broken piece is no set at all. And like I sad that disclaimer was added sometime after the fact. When I went on their site the Fischer sets were $99.95 and after a few hours they jacked them to $149.95. I was on their site ordering in the first hour they posted. I was even going to order a Fischer set for $99.95 but I am not impressed with it even for that price although it looks like a solid set and well made, it just doesn't have appeal for me.
I agree with Mike. If I get my set with a broken piece they will certainly replace that piece or I will do what I must to have PayPal stop payment and I will post to high heaven complaints about the company everywhere possible.
I ordered just before Mike and that notice was not there when I bought mine either.

This HOS disclaimer showed up after I placed my order: "this is a clearance chess set and All Sales are Final. No refunds, returns, exchanges or replacement pieces are allowed. It does not come with a certificate of authenticity or a plaque". I have emailed HOS requesting they cancel my order and issue Paypal refund. It appears the sets are seconds or why would they post this disclaimer?.

Aparently our hopes of getting a decent liberty should be looking at chessbazar, they anounced a new liberty, and a new lardy, also anounced...
Maybe I should get me one of this HOS liberty sets and offer replacement pices online, lol.
I don't like making compulsive buys, so after thinking in getting me one HOS liberty I came back to the forum and see the post about the notice... I put a hold on that.

CB Liberty should be here I think in a couple weeks. The Lardy I have no interest in. You can find original Lardy's on eBay for very reasonable prices. I have no idea if someone talked them into making reproductions of such a common set? On the other hand I have been watching on line and haven't found an original Liberty set in 12 months. I know they come up now and then but they are still rare especially with original box. I hope CB does a bang up job on the Liberty set.

I just spoke to "Julian" at "The House of Staunton", and he assured me that if anything is wrong with any of the three "clearance" chess sets that I just ordered from them, they would replace any damaged pieces. He said that this was according to, not only himself, but also according to "Scott" (the manager) and "Shawn" (the owner). "Julian" was initially unaware of the change in the terms of sale of "The House of Staunton" 's latest "sale" chess sets, and expressed the opinion that the wording of the "final sale" notice is incorrect and will likely be changed.
Insofar, as I really would like to have the chess sets that I ordered, I'll give it a week for the sets to arrive and then see what happens, as I can always file a dispute with PayPal, if any pieces are damaged and "The House of Staunton" doesn't honor their verbal agreement with me today over the telephone.

They change the wording now:
The new wording goes like this:
"Because this is a clearance item, ALL SALES ARE FINAL. We will not be able to honor any refund, return or exchange requests for this item. This is a first-quality product and comes with the House of Staunton's One Year Manufacturer's Warranty."
This looks way better that the thing they have before, still the question is what the Warranty covers?, if still final sale.
Anyway, they also are offering the set out of the clearance deal, for $71.20, on the cheapest Wood options.
So the options are:
1. The discounted price with the regular warranty.

2. The clearance final sale at $49.50 option with limited warranty

Asuming both deals comes from the same stock the question now is to consider if the full waranty worth $20 or not.
Honestly I always opt out of warranty premiums, this is my personal thing.
I received an email saying that they would definitely replace any pieces damaged in shipping.
The final sale thing is because they are discontinuing the product and will not have replacement pieces a year from now.
I believe the original listing at the higher price is a remnant and the clearance price is the only current one.
So, they have the one year warranty and will not be able to replace pieces after that.

Discounted price..clearance price...im not sendinig someone money when they are telling me you arent getting a refund, replacement, etc. No matter what we send you, in any condition.

Yes I got in touch with them this morning, the stock is 100% 1st quality and if you happen to get a broken piece yes they will replace it and guarantee it for a year against cracking etc. So I am fine with that. Great price and I played with one at the club and it is a very nice set. For $49.95-$59.95 you can't go wrong. Will tell you how it comes when I get it this Wednesday or Thursday.
Right now the House of Staunton has a few of their wood sets on Clearance.
The Liberty Series set starts at $49.95. I have one in Rosewood and it has held up phenomenally. In Rosewood it is now $59.95 and I just had to buy an extra at that price.
They also have the Professional, Margate, Fischer-Spassky, and Renegade sets at least 50% off. One of my friends in our club has had a Renegade set since Frank came out with it and it's the only set he uses. I called him about the Clearance and I think he's going to buy one. The base price now is $99.95 and in Rosewood it's %114.95. That's a lot cheaper than they were even a week ago.
If you're looking for a Liberty set this is a great one at that cheap of a price.
