HOS Fischer-Spassky 1972 chess pieces review

▲ I got it from HOS at a price of $149.95, since it was a clearance item.

If you are a big fan of Fischer-Spassky chess set, this is a good deal.

But unfortunately, a knight came with a CRACK.

(I paid extra dollars for special packaging, but it is so annoying that I got a cracked piece.)

▲ White and black pieces. I like the design of reykjavik knight, which was used in legendary Fischer-Spassky 1972 match.

null

▲ However, pieces are much smaller than other sets, so the set looks like a miniature toy.

I put Zagreb 59 pieces from thechessstore.com for comparison.

null

▲ Size of King & Queen is okay. F-S 1972 king is 3,75", while zagreb king is 3.875".

null

▲ But knight is really tiny, as you can see in the picture.

Height of Zagreb pawn is the same as that of F-S 1972 knight.

▲ Overall, this is a good set, but white knight came with a crack.

Also, Ebonizing of the black knight was not perfect.

HOS gives 1 year warranty for this set, so I will call and ask them replace these pieces.

Sorry to hear about the cracked piece. However, since it is a clearance item you may not be able to get a replacement piece. From their website (on a dropdown for that particular set, scroll all the way down and click on Returns & Exchanges):

This Is A Clearance Chess Set And All Sales Are Final. No Refunds, Returns, Exchanges Or Replacement Pieces Are Allowed. It Does Not Come With A Certificate Of Authenticity Or A Plaque.

I actually bought this same set a few months back. Both ebonized rooks came with scratches. I called HoS, and spoke with Julian and Kevin. Sent an email off with pictures. They sent me replacements at no charge.

Just make sure you give them the two letter code on the box it came in so they can send you pieces from the same batch.

Was your on clearance at the time?

Customer service center told me this product is warranted for 1 year, even though it is a clearance set.

Thank you for advice happy.png

I am considering to request replacement pieces after a few months, to see if other pieces are okay with my current environment.

What do you think of this idea?

That's a very nice set!  But what is the point of complaining because larger sets exist....so what?....

Thanks!

In terms of size of pieces.. well, it depends on personal preference.

I like delicate design of pieces, but they are a little bit smaller than I expected.

Because of its size, the knight looks like a miniature toy, which makes it feeble.

neverherebefore

Did you check the sizes of the pieces before ordering?

Waiting to request replacement pieces is risky....they may not exist in a few months....

I own this set as well as a number of other sets.  This is a reproduction of the set used in the 1972 World Championship match of Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.  The original set was no bigger than this set.

This is also not one of the smaller sets I own or have seen.  I also like some of my larger sets, but this set is not too small.  It is well weighted and has a nice balance and heft to the pieces when playing.

Of course there are sets with 4.0" Kings, instead of the 3.75" of this one, that are bigger all around.

On the pieces with the flaws, I would get them replaced right away and not wait.  As RussBell points out, the batch that those pieces came from might not be available for too long and a replacement you get later might not match the rest of the set.

Thank you for advice.

Fischer-Spassky set looks nice, and now I am getting used to the size of the set.

Thanks for posting this set. I like it a lot 🙂 I have been trying to decide whether this or Official Staunton or the Jaques version of this reproduction is what to get.
