House of Staunton VS Jacques of London chess set recommendation

Recent Jaques (later than about 1960) are not that great - you're correct in thinking that they're living off their history. Old Jaques sets are the dogs though IMO. Have a look at this very long and sometimes very angry thread:

Have a look on ebay too

Thank you all.
So basically there is no difference in quality and craftsmanship? Mostly history and tradition right? In that case I guess I ll go with House of Staunton as they are cheaper.

Just to give you another option to consider, here is an offering from Staunton Castle. A Jaques ebony/ "antiqued" boxwood set circa 1850-1855 priced reasonably @ $347. I'm considering obtaining this set myself as my first Jaques set. In addition shipping is free.

Thank you all.

Unless you're willing to cough up for an old Jaques, that would make sense. That set QtoQlevel3 posted looks nice too. I understand that almost all modern Staunton sets come from India now, including Jaques

Correction SM: HOS least expensive collector's (Jaques) set is @ $597.50 and is only available on clearance in this choice of woods blood rosewood and ebony. In addition there is a Fed Ex delivery charge of $17.59 to be accrued as well in the final pricing. I believe my choice from stauntoncastle will arrive free of charge at set price and no other charges set forth. Besides I like the color of the antiquing of the boxwood although the HOS offer is quite stunning.

@QtoQLevel3, I'm a bit of an only-genuine-antique-Jaques snob, but I must admit that set looks good. Do you know why there appears to be an British phone box in the background though?

@IpswichMatt: That isn't a British phone box it is an actual window with either a padauk window trim or red painted window frame.

As someone who has actually bought a chess set with that colour combination from House of Staunton, I can only say one thing: Don't. While the production quality is exquisite, they're far too similar in colour (the red set is really a very deep burgundy, and will darken further with time). If you don't have very, very strong strip lightning or extremely good natural light, you'll be hard put to tell the difference between black and white. Also, if even you do, it still feels as if you're playing black against black. I ended up a buying a proper white half-set, so now have a set of 48 pieces.

Staunton Castle offers free shipment by Fedex but the buyer has to pay high customs duty and import tax which will be invoiced to him by Fedex after one week of receiving his order.

The "Official Staunton" company offers free shipping and lower prices than HOS so maybe that's a good option. I've never ordered from them but the reviews in this forum are largely favorable.
Actually Official Staunton has had all good reviews on this forum. There has not been one complaint regarding the products or service from Carl.

BonTheCat,
Buy another white set half set and now you have 2 really nice sets!
Hehe! No, I'm perfectly happy with my 1½ sets! I just swap between the ebony and the deep burgundy as my fancy takes me!

Official Staunton is not any better either as some agents on here try to prove. Their chess sets specially ebony has its own problems also same chess sets are being sold almost half price on ebay.
Yes of course we believe you as you got stellar credibility 🤣🤣🤣 hundreds of positively reviews from so many official UK Staunton And because you decide to talk your usually bullcrap garbage again so now it is the problem for official company that you choose to say the bad Who is stauntonmaster what he do for life where he lives ?? he is house of Staunton master I have been told he is somebody called Sean house Staunton USA!! making more sense now why you are doing your bad trolling game
Looking for a nice wooden chess set. Willing to spend decent amount of money.
HoS and JoL are two of the most reputed companies and I know you can't go wrong with either.
Anyone who has used both sets and won't mind highlighting the main differences. Not sure why JoL is more expensive than HoS. I'm assuming it's because of the history maybe?
Thanks.
