How does the Fritz Friend Mode Handicap correlate to a chess player's strength?

It doesnt really relate to ratings at all.

It just means that Fritz is playing and will offer you the equivalent of a pawn odds sometime during the game.

You can't judge what that equates to as a rating, as Fritz in friend mode is a different engine than the full works, and also its rating will depend on your PC and specs etc.

it's not technically a different engine, but rather the same engine operating under different parameters.

But you are correct in that the handicap value doesn't correlate with a rating. It's supposed to be viewed like a golf handicap -- how many strokes a better player has to "spot" you to make it a competitive match -- except thath here it's applied to chess. The problem with that idea is that it hasn't a prayer of catching on in a hobby/game/sport where the typical greeting offered by two strangers isn't "Pleased to meet you" but is instead "What's your rating?"
