identify old staunton chess pieces

Sort:

hi,  couple of days ago i bought online, what look to me like a quite old set of staunton chess pieces. 3.5 inch.
i am trying to identify the maker and date them.
looks very old to me,from the condition of the wood, and the style, maybe mid 19th century-early 20th,
they could be "jaques"... but i don't have good photos, which could show a stamp on the king/rooks/knights so until i get them,i can not be sure...
also i don't recognize this exact knight style on any of jaques design. maybe some one here can show some light on the subject and recognize this type of style, or other makers that it can be relate to.
thanks.

I hope you didn't pay too much! Those pieces are going to take a lot of effort to restore them to like new condition even if its possible. The knight looks like a French Knight to me but, I could be very wrong on this!

I wouldn't count on them being "jaques".  Not ebony since you can see lighter wood where the finish has worn off the black Q.  Just play and enjoy them (says the man who bought a set of Chinese bone pieces for $8 hoping they might turn out to be ivory).

Yeah, these don't look like Jaques at all, but I can't say either what they do look like. You can't identify Jaques sets by the crown marks on rooks and Knights as lots of makers did that. You will see "Jaques London" written across the bottom of the King on all but some of the very earliest of wooden sets which are obvious from the look of the pieces. The pictures are pretty bad. Certainly not all the black pawns are from the same set and at least one of the White's looks suspicious too.

i received them today... no markings or stamps. the black pieces are not made from ebony wood. also,1 of the black pawns and 1 of the white pawns are bigger, look the same style, patina and wood, but just bigger.
here some better photos.
thank you all for your answers.

You can use this site to help figure out if they're Jaques:

The Knights do look a bit like Lardy, but it's not Lardy, and I don't think it's French either. It looks pretty English to me, but not Jaques. That's the best I can tell.

yep,same conclusions here...
thanks.

Pics are really bad, so hard to see any detail. This is certainly not a Jaques, as others have pointed out, nor is it an Ayres or BCC etc. It looks a little like a Whitty - but again, without better pictures, I'd be hesitant to hazard a guess (Whitty example see here: http://www.crumiller.com/chess/chess_pages/staunton/WhittyWoodenSet.htm). I'd say British somewhere between 1890 and 1920.

Given that it's a composite set w/ no box and black pieces are not ebony, I don't think it's worth much...

didn't paid much... Wink

you might be right. the king's crown look like whitty, also the style and shape of the bishops and queens... not sure about the Knights. i uploaded some new photos ,you can see better.
