I'm looking for a clackety chess clock (Washington Square style)

Hi, I'm just wondering what kind of chess clock was used during the end scene of "Searching for Bobby Fischer" (Waitzkin's final match with Poe in the movie). The reason I ask is because I like all of my things to provide great tactile feedback (it is for this reason that I like very loud keyboards)

Does anyone know what type of clock was used in this scene? Or could anyone go back the movie and try to tell me what kind it is? I'd appreciate it greatly!

Thanks in advance.

i can't remember which clock, but i know the game timer II by excaliber (black with roundish black buttons) is a loud guy.  it was probably something along those lines.

It was probably an analog BHB clock which was the inexpensive standard at the time--another good analog clock is made by Jerger

It was definitely not that one. That one hurts my eyes to even look at. Also loldigital.

Now we're making progress. Those BHBs do look quite nice.

This one looks like a Jerger to me (tilt-back base):

The clock used during the Poe game looks like one of those quartz analogs with the white stems. Good clocks (for an analog)

P.S. It always bugged me how the kids hammered the clocks so clumsily in that movie.

Yep.  Those were very popular back in the day.  Go to Amazon and search "quartz chess clock" and you'll find them listed by various manufacturers.  If you want a noisey digital, the Saitek clock buttons make a lot of racket.  Smile

Goldendog--re post #6 I have a Jerger than looks just like that which was sold in the US and is available on e-nay ) around $75)--there are different stylistic versions of Jerger (and BHB) depending on when they were made

So far, it looks like a diamond quartz, but I'm trying to figure out which brand as well.

Probably this one, "Diamond" being the brand name. You can find them on eBay, new, for as little as $20 plus shipping.

Well, when you actually look at the movie, you can see that there's a brand name where the diamond logo is

Mea culpa. I just assumed. Haven't seen the movie in a while as I don't have a vcr set up, and don't own it on dvd. Could it possibly just be an earlier model by the same manufacturer (using a name rather than a logo)? Whatever it is, it's probably something pretty common. I don't recall a lot of different quartz clocks being advertised at the time.

Oh, no problem at all. The clock you showed me there is EXTREMELY close to what I'm looking for. In fact, I think the only difference is the brand name. Literally.

Also, I was able to find a frame in the movie that showed the lettering on the top.

It says "US (king logo) Chess"

Sounds like a US Chess Federation logo. I just looked at an old issue of Chess Life, and saw an ad there. A virtually identical clock was available from another company with a "PBM" brand. My guess is that the manufacturer was the same, but was willing to supply them with custom faces.

Edit: There were separate ads (in a 1996 issue I grabbed randomly) for USCF and PBM chess. Both had quartz clocks for sale, apparently identical except for the clock face.
