Inexpensive Amazon Wooden Chess Set Recommendations?

Sort:
NerdWithANecktie
I’m putting a wooden chess set on my wish list this year. Any recommendations? My criteria:

1. MUST be wooden
2. MUST be from Amazon.com
3. MUST have a reasonable price for Christmas shopping
4. Magnetic would be nice but (for cost reasons) it doesn’t need to be
5. Should have felt on the bottom to prevent the board to be scratched

Thanks!

It would probably be easier to give you some advice if you were a bit more concrete on the budget.

No restriction at all on size?

Budget is probably like 75$+

At that price point a high quality plastic set from WE chessHOS or legend.

Are you talking $75 for the pieces and a board?

I would say wood pieces and board is too ambitious for a $75 budget.  A nice plastic set in tan with a wood pattern mousepad board is a better way to go.

You can get a decent wood set with German knight [no board] and 3.75" king for 80-100$ at Amazon. For one with a French knight I'd guess 100-125 would be typical these days for one I'd enjoy playing with [weighted well and felted].   I got a similar one years ago from my MIL and enjoy it a lot. Another option is to get a nice 2.5" king set for analysis.  I use my small analysis set lots more than my big wood set. -Bill

Look at the Wegiel sets from Poland.  My favorite is the Wegiel Consul.  They have many choices for size amd types to choose from on amazon.

I'm wondering if anyone is still interested in the Square off Pro roll up board, I just got one and thought I might weigh in on that.

Hi NerdWithANecktie if you are on a tight budget you may want to look at used wood chess sets

Of wooden and cheap sets that aren’t crap I think those made by Wegiel in Poland are good.

I own the one at the link below:
Wegiel Handmade European Professional Tournament Chess Set With Wood Case - Hand Carved Wood Chess Pieces & Storage Box To Store All The Piece https://a.co/d/jcLbKII

If you want cheap then this is pretty good. The pieces do not have the nice smooth finish like the expensive wooden sets have such as something you could get from chessbazaar or from major brands. But they are still good, weighted pieces. The folding board in particular is very nice. Although you should inspect the hinges to make sure it is flat at the seam in the center when it is unfolded.

They also sell a set of chessmen only that are larger in size than the set I linked to. They also sell very nice and very affordable flat boards that are not actually made with inlaid squares.

You just have to make sure you do not get those decorative sets with unusual shapes like ambassador or whatever they sell that has unusually shaped kings and queens, or burned in artwork on the chessmen.
