Is there some sort of portable board for Sultan Series Luxury Chess Pieces ?

Sort:

I'm sure it sounds absolutely crazy; BUT, I would like to purchase a set of incredibly-high-end chess pieces (e.g. the HoS Sultan Series Luxury Chess Pieces mentioned in the title) and I would like to have a board that could store the pieces (most likely by folding, although I was interested by a comment someone made about a leather chess board).

The board would need (1) to not clash (unattractively) with the pieces (I would very much like to get the African Padauk/Rosewood variety) and (2) be able to store the pieces.

Assuming I could get the pieces in the size that would suit the board, I still haven't been able to find any board matching these two requirements. It is odd to me that there wouldn't be a demand for this sort of board...

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be INCREDIBLY appreciative!

Thank you!

The Sultan by HOS is very nice looking but, at a very steep price. I would not be hauling this nice set around in a foldup box. JMO

Would something like this work? ---->> Large Alabaster Chess Case

I don't want the board/pieces to always have to be on display.

@Crappov, unfortunately, I think that board (1) wouldn't have fitted slots for the pieces and (2) I wouldn't think the  board went well with the pieces.

Maybe it sounds crazy too, but the magnetic BCE chessboards from Jonas would be ok for me, and would make your set even to be portable.

I think he still have some red ones, I think them would fit your color.

It is not a high end chessboard, but the combination would be kinda cool in my opinion.

Edited:

Maybe not the best combination. The square size of Jonas chessboard is about 5.5 cm. Still I feel it as a good portable solution for high end chess pieces.

I don't know the requirements of your pieces in terms of square size, but I have the rosewood and green folding board from HOS. If your kings are 4" then the 2.375" squares are available.

HOS also has a line of folding tournament boards all with 2.25" squares.

Neither Jonas' boards, nor the boards from HoS allow for storage of pieces. Frown

Right. My suggestion would be to relax your requirements.

lelembelis

As much as I realize your suggestion is probably the most logical and reasonable.

I think perhaps what prompted me to start the thread was that it seems absolutely absurd to me that I would be the only one out there who wanted the kind of product described.

I mean, who wants to be lugging around a chess board and a box filled with all those chess pieces? Designing a product like the one mentioned wouldn't be at all complicated (for anyone familiar with woodworking).

The convenience alone...I just don't really understand.

Understand that you are talking about high priced chess sets here, and pieces that are 4 to 4.5 inches at the King height.

I understand you see these sets in boxes but those boxes sre not designed to make the set portable and protected.

To make a board that has storage in it would mean a big and heavy box.  The box would need some type of isolated and padded compartments for each piece.  And to have a 2.5 inch square size would make the width of the box no less than 23 inches and most likely larger with the border.

Also the box would need to be at least 2.25 inches or larger on its inside depth.

With the board, box and hardware and padding that is a lot of material, weight and size.

Plus you will want to protect the outside of this board and box itself.  Now you're talking about a case for it all, whew.

You could consider an Ulbrich chess board.

Square size is 45 mm so you need a smaller chess set.

I own the Sultan in laquered B&W(4.4" set with 2" base)
Here's a few things to take note of....
1. This is an Arabian themed set, or even an Islamic themed set, think "Aladdin"(that is based on standard staunton design).  You can mismatch the king's finials, to make it so that it's a Christian king vs. an Islamic army(see below).  Plus, the tops of the king, queen, and bishop are bulbous, or rose bud shaped(very arabic), a fairly unique set, and it might not be exactly what you want(if you are looking for a more 'classic staunton' design).
2. This set is HUGE, and heavy.  I dropped a rook one time, I was just moving it during a game, it slipped from my hand, fell about 1-3 inches, and it dented the board (that green board you see in the pic).  It knocked the finish off, and left a permanent dent in the board, haha.
3.  So, I weighed the set today(for you, and for me), in its extremely light case(as can be seen in this next photo), the scale said 7 pounds even.  My scale might not be exact, but you could use the box of pieces to workout your arms, or you could drop it from an airplane, and do minor damage during a war.

4.I'm all for a 'chess set dream'(that beautiful, COMPLETELY unobtainable, vision).  So, if it is your dream to put the Sultan in a case that is also a chess board, GO FOR IT!!!  But, be careful.  The set is not really even designed to travel, it's more of what is considered to be an 'around the house', or something like that set.
5.I'll tell you this too, if you go to say, a coffee shop, and you play a game.  First, you're gonna need a board with 2.5" squares.  So, without a border that's a 20"x20" board(that's probably bigger than most shop tables).  The 4" Sultan may set on a 2.375" board, but that's still a 19" surface(without borders).  When you start playing, and taking pieces, you're gonna need a pretty good sized spot to sit the material, and like I said, the set is around 7 pounds.  (the HOS site says 5.6 pds, but if you put them in a folding chess board, that could easily end up at 15-20 pds).  If it's a game where a lot of pieces get taken, you are gonna have a HUGE pile of 'pounds of pieces' haha (it can really get ridiculous)
5.My suggestion(to make this dream a reality), is find a chess board builder, and build a HUGE, customized board/case.  Put some pretty serious locks on that thing, something you can lock with a key.
I think it's a great idea.  I just wanted to 'weigh in' har har
6.Here's an image of the mismatched finials.  The white one on the left is more of a traditional European Christian cross, the one on the right is a unique design, that represents more of an Islamic version("Sultan" means "a Muslim sovereign").  Each king has one of each finial, so they can be set either which way.

I'm sorry, but I just had to add my two cents to this thread. Everyone agrees that it is a high-end luxury set, but no one has mentioned the price: $1,049!

Maybe you're a lot richer than I, or maybe you have chess-playing friends with champagne tastes who invite you over often. But if I had a set like this, it would never leave the house. I would have a beautiful handcrafted wooden board for it, a felt-lined wooden storage box, and a substantial table on which to play and display. Oh, and that substantial table would be in a wood-paneled den lined with bookshelves laden with antique volumes of forgotten lore. And there would be an Oriental rug on the floor next to a marble fireplace. The cat would be lounging on one of the leather armchairs near the fire, and the brandy in a cut-glass decanter would be waiting the end of the game.

You want to travel around and play chess, they make nice heavy plastic pieces and roll-up vinyl boards. No one will fault you.

Cyklone

I own a Sultan set in 4.0" size, so I understand your desire for an extra-nice chess set for use in the house.  I use a 2.375" board with my set.  I keep the board in a case, which you can find at House of Staunton or Chess House, and I keep my chess pieces in a vinyl-covered box with cushy, individual compartments for each piece.  This seems like the best solution to me.  If you want a 2.375" folding board, you will need to get it custom-made, and as was said above, it will be big and heavy.

Thank you all for the comments!

I'm going to try to figure out how best to ask this question (edit the original post, create a new thread, etc.), but you have provided some much-needed insight (and I'm also realizing I should not have been so specific in my title and first post).

I have now spent a great deal of time looking at various chess pieces (falling in love with number of different designs/models).  I am definitely set on a high-end (and yes, expensive) set and I am afraid I'm also unmoveable on the folding board that will allow me to keep the pieces inside (anything else would just feel awkward and suboptimal).

I do think something smaller might be more in line with what I'm seeking...unfortunately most of the truly beautiful sets I've come across in the particularly beautiful wood or bone seem to be of the very-big variety...

Suggestions?

P.S. I'm currently looking into a custom board, but using custom.com I am not really seeing much evidence of this kind of work....

Mr-Endron

As a general rule, I never trust my cat or other human opponents with a set in excess of 200, but godspeed to you I suppose.

Also, I'd absolutely ditch the folding travel board idea if you really want to drop this much on a chess set.

Lastly, I'm just going to through this out there, but you can still get a proper ebony set in the 400-500 range, while also buying a handful of other more practical sets for everyday study and play, should you want a more balanced suggestion here.

Keep searching online, there are chessboard makers out there, but they aren't as readily available as you'd think.  Plus, they 'come and go'.  I'm sure any decent woodshop carpenter could build a quality folding board.  But, you'll want to figure out what set you want to transport first, figure out what square size you want, and then build the board 'around' your set.
Also, you may wanna plan on putting the folding board into a leather case once its folded, else you are gonna beat the crap out of it, especially if it's heavy.
