Isle of Lewis Chess Set

I just got the regular sized set last week. I've wanted this since 1999, and finally had the extra loot to get one! I got mine off eBay for $83.00 shipped! My only regret is I didn't order the one that came with a nice board for it for an extra $30.00 or so.

With that being said, does anyone know where to get a nice quality board on the cheap that will compliment this set adequately?

Pat_Zerr

Pics! Pics! Pics! I'm planning on buying a marble chess set in Mexico next week.

I guess the best way to find a good board is to google.  I think there's lots of them to choose from out there, but I can't say if they'd be cheap or not.

Ooh! Make sure and post some pics of that set you buy in Mexico.

I bet their are some beautiful chess sets to be had in Mexico at a great price!

Have fun shopping.

There is a theory that the Isle of Lewis chessmen didn't originate on the Isle of Lewis.

...also that they may not be chess pieces.

Anything is possible, I suppose, but my wife gave a Isle of Lewis set to me as a wedding present and they certainly look as though they are chessmen to me.  No matter as far as I am concerned, because until proven otherwise it is a chess set in my mind.

Somebody around here recently posted a link to a site discussing a lot of possibilities. I couldn't find that post but I found this site: http://textualities.net/geoff-chandler/not-even-from-lewis-mate-2/

It seems very opinionated but at least covers the major facts and conjecture. Personally, I think they make a nice looking chess set whatever they may be.

The other discussion also ended up with Geoff Chandler.

Thanks! I didn't remember what the thread was really about and didn't remember I had posted in it or I could have found it easily. I have no opinion on the true origin or purpose of the men. I just thought it was a thought provoking article.

I need to see a pic of your set. I own a set with its board. They come in different sizes.

Okay, be patient, because I am not the best at posting photos on chess.com.

Thanks for the site. I will check it out.  Often we discover what we learn about historical records are not true.

Thanks for this, because I was not aware of this thread.

This is the set I got. The one with a "Tower Style" Rook is the smaller set.

I just got a nice Mexican set still in the box on eBay today for like $8 SHIPPED!

If it's not carved in walrus bone, it just ain't worth it. Surprised

I have a related theme that I made for this site: Writch's Isle of Lewis. I recommend that you use it with the light wood board and wooden 3d pieces on your settings.

Aren't they endangered, or something?

Or something.

Chess.com Scientists attempt to re-create the Woolly Mammoth.

I have heard of the effort to Jurassic Park the Wooly Mammoth back into existence. It's probably just an effort to get the price of a Mammoth Ivory Chess Set down below $13,000
