Jaques of London made in India

I'd hate to see that knight on the left coming for my king. I'd be running to the queenside!!

I very slightly prefer the Staunton knight in the pictures (cf #10), but I clearly prefer the Jacques rook.

But all in all, frankly, I don't care much. I analyse almost only on travel magnetic boards where pieces are painted circles, so I did not get used to the luxury pieces enough to be able to tell.

i prefer staunton, not only because the knight looks more harmonious i prefer the colour a bit more as well.

The cheap Jaques pieces are made in India maybe...The top jaques pieces are crafted in England though I think.

I like the HOS set better than your new Jaques pieces.

Just as an aside, I accounted for inflation for a 1912 ad for Jaques men--a pretty good deal in my eyes:

Referring to the Op post # 13...

In fairness to Jaques isn't that one of the cheapest boxed sets they sell and that the 4 inch 1849 just might be way better quality having used just maybe one of India's elite carvers... I mean there is a big diff between 200-300+ pounds and 2000-3000+ pounds...

The Jaques set photographs that machotime and ifekali posted are both supposed to be of the same set pictured on the Jaques' website as their "Original Staunton Design" set? Wow, if so, that's really awful, while ifekali's set looks fairly close to the Jaques photo, machotime's certainly doesn't resemble it in any of its chessmen, not just the knights, which are particularly far from those shown in Jaques' photo.

My experience with Jaques, last year, was none too good. They ignored four of my inquiries on their websites, two each to both the U.K. and U.S.A. offices. A phone call to their U.S.A. office followed by an e-mail to the person that I spoke to, finally got a reply from the U.K. office, three weeks later. When I went to the website to purchase three sets at a "buy three for the price of two sale", I discovered from Jaques' website that their sale was over and that they were "closed for the holidays" for more than two weeks(!), four days before Christmas(!), even though there was absolutely no prior notice on their website of when their sale was to end or that they would be closing for over two weeks!

As it may offer interesting information about some of Jaques' chess sets to readers of this forum, here's the e-mail that I received from their U.S.A. office with the U.K. office's answers to my questions about some of their sets. Notice that, according to Jaques of London, their $799.99 "1930 Edition 3.5" Chess Set" is made completely
of boxwood, and that they declined to answer my questions as to where their sets were actually made.

Jaques of London have their cheap (under £50.00) sets mass produced in China!! 

All their other sets including the top of the range collection are made by AIW ,India!

I have a Jaques Chinese version with 3 1/2 inch king. I like the set. The Knights look vicious looking.! For 30 bucks shipped its a keeper.

Curious... Back around 1849 till whenever... Were the carvers all from India back in the good ol days as well or ?

I cannot confirm this but there were many craft guilds in England most likely Carvers would of been one such group. The factory where Jaques manufactured chess sets was bombed during the war. I do not know the whole story here. But if someone can fill in the story...

Since FIDE has their own World Championship set now, things look rather bleak for Jaques IMO.
