JLP Woodworking chess boards?

I just ran across this online. Does anyone know anything about, or have any experience with the JLP Woodworking chess boards?  Are these boards still being produced?  They appear to be virtually identical to the Drueke solid wood boards.

Bought the 2" square size earlier this year @ $299. Very happy with it and the quality is top notch. Reasonable shipping fee, packaged well and fast delivery. This size is on sale now for $229 which looks to be quite a good deal. I got tired of looking for an original Drueke and was a bit hesitant about the new ones being produced.

I've just matched it up with the Official Staunton Paul Morphy set which is a perfect match to my eyes. I'll be posting a few pics in that thread.

Good feedback.  So you would rate the JLP Woodworking board the same in quality as Drueke solid wood boards?  Did you buy the board from Chess House?

Also, could you paste a link to the thread you referred to with the Paul Morphy set from Official Staunton.

Thank you.

Videos by chesshouse, showing off and comparing the Drueke and JLP Woodworking solid wood chess boards, as well as the JLP chess table....

I'm impressed...

As I've never owned a Drueke board I can't comment from first hand knowledge how they compare to the JLP. I've seen no negatives about them except for someone complaining about the grain direction but that's a subjective opinion. Mine runs vertical. One noticable difference however is that the border on the 2.25" JLP is smaller vs. the Drueke. Some may like it for the smaller overall board size others may think it's too narrow.

The real test may be time and how they hold up after many years especially if they are prone to warpage and or separation being a solid wood board. I would think the craftsman should be skilled in selecting, matching and curing woods properly.

Thanks Bogo.  I own several Drueke solid wood chessboards and consider them to be of outstanding quality, manufacture and craftsmanship.  They are my (chess) pride and joy!

However, having just watched, for the first time today, the YouTube videos of the JLP Woodworking boards sold by Chesshouse, it appears that they are at least the equivalent (if not better) in quality to the Drueke boards.  If that is true, the JLP boards may be considered to be the heir apparent to the legendary Drueke legacy.

Thanks also for posting the link to the thread on the Paul Morphy set sold by Official Staunton.  It was mentioned in the thread (8 days ago) that one could get a 55% discount on the set by entering "MorphySale" at checkout.  Do you know if this discount is still in effect (as of today 20 August 2016)?

The set is currently advertised on the site at a price of $181.69USD.  With 55% off, the dicounted price should be $181.69 * 0.45 = $81.76USD which is an incredible price for a nice, ebonized boxwood, 3.5 inch King set.

JWBogo

I ordered the Morphy set on 8/12 with the discount. It was delivered the middle of the following week - unbelievable speed from overseas! You can probably check if the discount is still in effect by entering the code prior to check out and see if it works before finalizing the order. You can also try messaging Carl (GM4U) or email the Official Staunton site but I think trying the code MorphySale would be the quickest.

RussBell

Thanks Bogo.  I went to the Official Staunton site, and as a test, went through the steps of ordering the Paul Morphy 3.5 inch King pieces (but did not complete the order).  Just to figure out the total price with discount and shipping. On the checkout page I entered the discount code "MorphySale".  It responded that it did not recognize this discount code.  Also the shipping charge (to California, USA) was given as $32.68.  So if the discounted sale price is no longer in effect, the set is overpriced at $181.69 + $32.68 = $214.37USD.

On the other hand, if the 55% discount were to be in effect the sale price, with shipping, should have been $81.76 + $32.68 = $114.44 which is roughly comparable to the price of the Fierce Knight and Exclusive Staunton, 3.5 inch King sets from The Chess Store, as well as the Players Series, 3.75 inch King set from HOS (with 15% discount code).  At comparable prices, I prefer the looks of the (3.5 inch) Fierce Knight/Exclusive Staunton, and the (3.75 inch) Players Series, pieces better than the (3.5 inch) Paul Morphy set.  But of course, it is said that "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"!

Eyechess

I also checked it out and the code no longer gets the 55% discount, sorry.

I would messsage Carl (GM4U) or email to the Official Staunton site to see if the discount might still be given.

At just a little over $80 this set is a great deal.  I would persnally value that set at $150 full retail compared to other sets I have bought.  But I never pay full retail, unless of course we are dealing with Noj.  And I do own 4 Noj sets.

RussBell

Thanks Eyechess.  $80 would be a great deal for the Paul Morphy set, if that is the total price.  But as I mentioned, the OS site quoted me a $32 shipping charge to CA, USA, which, with a discounted price of $80, brings it in line with other similarly priced sets we have discussed.  In that case I don't consider the Paul Morphy set to be particularly noteworthy in comparison to the other sets.  Nor am I saying that is inferior.  As has been mentioned (today, on a different thread), both Bawker and I own the Fierce Knight pieces (ebonized boxwood, 3.5 inch King) from The Chess Store, and we are very happy with them.

By the way.  What is Noj?

@JWBogo. I forgot to ask earlier - from whom did you purchase your JLP board?  Chesshouse?

RussBell

Another thread I posted regarding Druke vs JLP Woodworking chess boards...

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/drueke-vs-jlp-woodworking-solid-wood-chessboards

Note the commentary in the thread regarding Chess House's decision to remove the word "Woodworking" from the name of the board (it's now just JLP or JLP USA).  This due to conflict with another business by the same name.

Yes, Chesshouse. Only supplier I was aware of.

RussBell

Thanks JWBogo.  Just wanted to confirm that, in case there was another source I was not aware of.

I don't own many boards, they are just too expensive for me. Especially the ones I would like. Plus I wouldn't have the room for them. I still like checking them out however. Thanks for all the info guys.

I recently purchased a JLP players board with 2.25 inch squares.  The quality of workmanship is outstanding.  I could not be happier.  Compared to my 50ish year old Druke, the construction and workmanship are comparable.  Other than the narrower boarder on the JLP, the only notable differences I see are the grain in the walnut and the finish.

The Druke walnut shows less grain; it is darker with less blonde streaks running thru the walnut.  Also, the JLP board appears to have a satin (likely polyurethane) finish.  I believe my Druke is unfinished or perhaps it was oiled.

Prior to picking up the JLP, I searched for a Druke with 2.25 squares.  I could not find one at a price I wanted to pay.  I'm happy with the JLP.  It's a wonderful board.

 @rickr705 -

Thanks for the feedback.  Glad you are happy with your JLP board.

However, regarding the base price of new JLP vs Drueke boards with 2.25 inch squares...from the respective websites...

Drueke = $225

JLP = $299 (Chess House - is exclusive retailer for JLP)

Also, since this thread was initiated, I discovered another maker of solid wood chess boards, "ColoradoWoodWorker" (Brad Borkowski) which I have since purchased from and am very pleased with, especially considering the price I paid...

https://www.etsy.com/shop/ColoradoWoodWorker

the board I purchased...$129 + $30 (shipping) for the 2.25 inch squares model...
