Just got a wonderful new book...

It is 50 Essential Chess Lessons by Steve Giddins.

It is a bit like Chernev's Logical Chess, but he does not start out and talk about each move. But he first gives several moves and then he starts in with what comes next and discusses each move.

The best thing is the book is divided into 5 chapters: Attacking the King (3 games),Defence(4 games), Piece Power (10 games), Pawn Structure (25 games!), and Endgame Themes (8 games.)

The thing that caught my eye were the 25 games on Pawn Structure!  (I have never tackled those books everyone talks about on pawn structure as they were so hard and over my head, but this looks promising!)

At the end of EACH annotated game he has a little section called "The Essential Lessons."

I really like the looks of this book, and so I think I will quit writing now and start reading. (I will head straight to the section on Pawn Structure!)

I ordered that book a few days ago.  I knew it was a book of annotated games for intermediate players but didn't know about the content.  Glad to hear there's so much focus on pawn structure because I could use some work on that.

Hope you like it. Let me know what you think when you get it.

Oh yes, this is a good book for low to mid-intermediate players. Typical plans are described for both sides, and the author's analysis is chatty, i.e. tells you in words what's going on, just enough variations given to understand the point being made. I actually enjoyed reading this one, and I read it from cover to cover while using a board, something I've rarely achieved with any other book (I've got about 20).

Snap it up!

Got this book today and just played through th first game. Overall I am impressed and look forward to playing through it. One thing I really like is that many of the games are in Fritz 12's database which makes playing along and looking at variations a breeze while reading.
