Ouch, those Jaques chessmen are really awful. You would think they would want to protect their brand and not slap the Jaques logo so prominently on the box...

I would also think that they would answer questions about their products, particularly as they request that you tender any questions that you may have on each and every product page, but, their main British office won't, ignoring numerous messages, allthough their U.S. office will genuinely try if you telephone them, even if they can't.

Photos, not words, please.

I'm not quite clear on what you're referring to.

Photographs of the Jaques chess set were linked to on the Jaques website in my post that burke3gd was referring to. Here's the link again:  http://www.jaqueslondon.co.uk/chess-pieces-luxury.html

I'm sorry to say that I can only recount in words my messages to Jaques sent from their website, their lack of response to my messages, and my telephone conversations with their U.S.A. office representatives, and cannot provide any photographs of these events.

I know that the German Knight does not appeal to some but, it plays nice in practice. I have the International & a Wegiel German Knight set & no one I ever played with complained about the Knight.!

It can be worse. Possibly even uglier knights and sets can currently be had.    http://www.thechessstore.com/product/WCS350/Basic-Staunton-Wood-Chess-Set-3-5-King    http://www.thechessstore.com/product/WCS375/Basic-Staunton-Wood-Chess-Set-3-75-King   http://www.thechessstore.com/product/KGR325/King-s-Guard-Staunton-Chess-Set-in-Rosewood-Boxwood-3-25-King   Imagine, someone actually "designed" these, was probably paid for doing so, and then someone else actually made them and is now valiantly trying to sell them.

Okay, that second one looks like a hell spawn but I can't help but like the sassy eyebrown on the third.

The second looks like a knight as played by Jerry Lewis.  The third looks like the "artist" just stopped trying.

The Chess Store "German" knights have no pupils in their eyes. Aron Nimzowitsch likened rooks on the seventh rank to blind pigs. Perhaps knights on KB5 or Q6 are like blind horses?

Likely why I don't care for German knights.  Don't like the newer Dubrovnik knights either.  From looking at some of the knights on Izmet's blog, they look quite nice with the knight wearing a champron.  The later ones, the carver doesn't seem to know what to do with those "extra" lines and the knights end up looking like they have four lips. :/

Back on topic: Michael Graves designed a chess/checkers set to be sold in Target stores.  It's almost attracive in its oddity, but the board/case was very cool -

I did not buy the ugly set below, okay? I got it as a gift. Note the bizarre and unnecessary Chinese dragon motif on the box. WTF? What bothers me most are the sloppy, ugly knights, especially the one on b1. Looks like it was stained with nicotine, doesn't it? This is the second time ever the pieces get to see daylight, by the way. At least at my home.

I hate these:

And love the International Series (German knights).

Oh I almost forgot.  The "foreskin" version of the BCE pieces is even worse:

... And with this observation, pawpatrol singlehandedly killed off an obscure chess piece design...

Love the thread btw, my favourite is the knight that looks like a dumb and happy  monster with the mouth wide open and one tooth:

What are they called again? A blob?

I LOVE THIS! (When you view it as the monster with a huge mouth like you described, obviously. As a "horse" it looks horrible)

Paw, I like the Stage One Western BCE set, with a few modifications. I prefer the the Stage Two rooks and knights (stamped), extra queens, blue leather pads, and stainless steel bases (though I think brass would look better).

I agree about the "foreskin," it breaks up the flow of the design.

I'm thinking of actually buying that set to shock and stun my opponentsSurprised

Really, that is the ugliest Knight I have ever seen.

An ugly chess set?? How dare you sir. There's no such thing.

In the YouTube video "my chess pieces collection", AT the end of the video, appears a set called "Staunton Horriblis" I believe a Portuguese design. Thought that was funny.
