Chesshouse is an outstanding chess dealer get something looks like a traditional Staunton design. Go to eBay and look for Lardy sets.
Get something in the 3.5- 4 inches.
There are very nice plastic options too.
Close to 200$ for new. Sales can help
Many styles but simple is more straightforward for play.

I started with The best chest set ever 4x weighted pieces and like them quite a lot! They are plastic tho but do not feel cheap at all. The other recommendation to start could be maybe a tournament set from house of Staunton I just bought it as my first wood set and it includes pieces, folding wood board, and a deluxe carrying bag for u dear 200 which isn’t that bad all things considered.

Do not buy a 4+ inch chess set for your first set. Stay in the range 3.5-3.75 inch

Agree-I'd even say just get the standard 3.75 king sized set as a first set.
