How should a 1500 rated player properly use this book? I know just memorizing line for line is bad because one is not really understanding the position so I was curious what other people have done to use this book to study openings.

Pick openings you like to play and start going thru the main variations and footnotes of sub variations.    If you feel you're not being productive that way, then whenever you go over games using your favorite openings then look them up in MCO to see how far the players followed opening theory and try to understand why they varied.

Minimally you should know all opening traps that you and your opponents can fall into with your favorite openings........and some basic strategies of your favorite openings.

My guess is that that is probably the best way to try to use MCO15, although it might be a good idea to keep in mind that it was written around 2007.

"... For new players, I cannot recommend books that use [an encyclopedic] type of presentation [of opening theory], because the explanatory prose that elaborates typical plans and ideas is usually absent, thus leaving the student without any clear idea why certain moves are played or even preferred over other apparently equivalent moves. ..." - FM Carsten Hansen (2010)

"... [Modern Chess Openings (15th ed.)] pretends to be everything for everybody, but it isn’t; it pretends to be up-to-date and relevant in all chapters, but it isn’t; it should be a good book, but it isn’t. ..." - FM Carsten Hansen (2008)

Can MCO be depended on to supply such information?

I'm trying to find this book but none of the sites I've checked have it.  Appears to be out of stock.  Anyone know who might have it in stock? Even Random House say's it is back ordered. THX
