Mr. Shaibel's Chess Set in Netflix's Queen's Gambit

Thank you @Impractical for the explanation and guidance. Helps me greatly in locating the set for her.

During 1950's the plastic set of that era would have been the Windsor Castle.
During the early 1960's. Drueke Players Choice set came into existence.
Me personally wished that Mr. Shaibel's set would have been a 1941 Liberty set. He seemed like he would have been a World War 2 vet and a set from that era would have been a more fitting set for him and the time period.

Thank you @KnightsForkCafe for the additional historical clarity. I find it personally fascinating as I have very little knowledge in chess. However, my desire was to surprise my daughter with an identical set from the miniseries if possible. Chess pieces and board. I know she will be delighted with this and I hope if will foster her growing interest in chess and not as a fad. Those visuals from the miniseries and having it in hand will imprint I think.

This might help, as far as an original set. Might be expensive: http://setinchboxes.com/vintage_large_3_inch_french_lardy_staunton_chess_set_in_wood_box_france.html
Here's a pretty close one, just off of this closeup:

If anything, the Queen's Gambit show came at the perfect time:
1. Re-ignite interest a game that can be enjoyed even in lockdown especially through the upcoming Thanksgiving 2020
2. Make people want to Spend and buy chess-related stuff online, be it equipment, books, lessons, computers or software, and keep the economy going

@leo00szilard You are welcome. It's cool that your daughter is interested in the game. Even though most of the sets used in The Queen's Gambit were not time period correct. Seems like the series has sparked a new interest in chess. Which is a major plus in my book.
Here's another set that was used in Episode 3 US Open Las Vegas scene.

I would recommend using a board with 2" squares or 50mm.
@chessroboto. Yes, this miniseries gem came at a great time. I don't know any about chess and it made it interesting for me. I agree with all the points you listed.
@sound67. I did not know that this miniseries generated that much interest. It's very encouraging.
@KnightsForkCafe. Thank you for the board size recommendation. Could you tell from the miniseries what size of King was Mr. Shaibel's set?

@leo00szilard I was able to tell because of how many of those sets I have personally and came across while at chess clubs. Me personally if I get Basic Club sets. I tend to get colors that are not the everyday Black, Ivory, or Natural colors. One set I chose Gold and Yellow. The other set I chose Aqua and Orange. You can make fun color combination with these sets if you choose to do so. Most of these Basic Club sets have a King that is 3.75 inches. Here is a place where you can get the different color options for the Basic Club set. They do offer a weighted option.

these chess pieces are very common here in germany. I can recommend them. They are full molded. I didn't seen many full molded plastic sets. I recommend 55mm squares for these. Actually in the series they used so called "Bundesliga" boards which are 58mm.

@stanrifkin Yes I have used them on 55mm boards and that does work but I like the looks of them on a 50mm board even more. 50mm seems a better fit in my opinion.

The chess set used by Mr. Shaibel and Beth Harmon in the Netflix series appears to be an English set from the 1930s. I purchased one on eBay and will post images of it for comparison with the one above, after it arrives.

In his book, the Queen's Gambit, author Walter Tevis described it only as having white and green squares. The one in the movie is different, but it is a board that a working man in his 50s might have owned in the mid 1950s. Here is an overhead shot of it from the video. It is a folding board. The pieces are clearly not plastic. Note the edging.

It's a plastic Basic Club set. There is nothing about his set that is from that time period. The only set that was from the time period in the series. Was the Latvian set used during the final games.

Sorry, when I said chess set, I included the board. Mr. Shaibel's board was from the old days, as was at least one of the chess boards used at the high school chess club where the fictional Beth Harmon played and defeated 12 players (see below). It must be red on the reverse as the edge of the playing side of the board is red. I agree that the pieces on this board appear to be plastic, but not the ones on Mr. Shaibel's board. In fact, the pieces on Mr. Shiebel's board, which is very similar to some from the 1930s, differ from one scene to another. Sometimes the white pieces are natural wood and sometimes the white pieces appear to have been painted white.
Mr. Shaible's board appears to be based on a 1930's board that is black on the opposite side, but the colours of its squares are different. Instead of being pale yellow and black, they are beige and brown. The back of the original board must have been black as its edges are black. So far I have not found one exactly like it. Some 1930s boards have black edges and scrolling like Mr. Shaibel's, but I have yet to find one that has beige and brown squares. I presume that the props department altered a vintage chess board for the Netflix series in order to improve the shots. The basswood chess pieces that come with the 1930's boards are not the same as the wooden ones used on Mr. Shaibel's board. The second image is of a 1930's board. It is the same as the one used in the chess club scene. The scrolling around the perimeter of this board differs from the scrolling on Mr. Sheibel's board and might predate it.

Please forgive my n00b question. I was hoping some experience enthusiasts on this forum can help me with a request. After watching Netflix's The Queen's Gambit with my family, my daughter took up an interest in chess. To surprise her I would like to buy her a nice chess set for her birthday. She is at an impressionable age. She really like the scenes where Mr. Shaibel and Beth plays chess in the basement of the orphanage. I would like to get her that identical set and hope someone who watched the miniseries can point me where to attain one. Are the pieces plastic or wood? It's hard for someone like me (who knows very little about chess) to identify.
