My Clay Chess set. Need advice and opinions.

I have created all 32 chess pieces with my own hands using low fire clay. They are all glazed and fired now. The only thing I need to do to complete them is find the perfect felt to glue to the bottoms. Also, I have yet to make/buy a board for my pieces. This being said, my questions are these:

1. What felt should I use to cut and place on my pieces? I would like a durable, "pool table" like felt, unless you can suggest a better felt for a better reason!

2. What board should I make? (mostly opinions here I'm curious about). I could make a clay board as well, but would glass look/be better? Wood Possibly?

I would love any input, suggestions, opinions, etc. I can get. This is the first chess set I've ever made, but I'm trying to take it very seriously as to get a good quality set as a result. Thank you in advance!

Since the pieces are clay, it almost seems fitting to do a board out of porcelain tiles of a suitable size.

For felt, I've used the self-stick stuff from the crafts department at Walmart on a number of projects that have seen plenty of hard use.  It's not luxurious, but it holds up fine, and it's cheap and easy to replace.  Cutting circles using a bit of pipe sharpened on the inside and hammered through the felt into a piece of scrap wood works really well, if you can come up with the right diameters.

Walmart sells decent felt that I used on a few chess pieces. I simply cut the felt slightly over sized & used Elmers glue on the bottom of the chess piece. I placed the piece on the felt & let it dry overnight. Then I used a sharp pair of sissors to trim. It turned out great.

Any photos? Sounds interesting!

You might want to consider leather also. Just mentioning it.

A "board" quilted from leather and you won't need felt on the pieces ...

Pics or it didn't happen. Smile  Seriously, I'd love to see pictures of your set.

I bought a marble & onyx set in Mexico a few years ago which didn't have any felt on the bottom of the pieces, but I bought some black felt at a craft store, sprayed some spray adhesive on one side, then stuck the pieces down onto it.  I then cut each piece off and carefully cut around the bottom of the pieces with scissors.  Worked like a charm.  I have a handmade wooden folding set that I may do this to as well, since the cheap felt on the bottom of the pieces is not in good shape.

I think a wooden board would be nice, but instead of painting it I'd consider different shades of stain.  You could find stain in various shades which will match your pieces nicely.

I bought sheets of green adhesive felt discs that I used to cover screw heads in my cupboards that I thought might scratch the finish.  If the size were right, these might end up being perfect and easy:

I found mine at Home Depot, but I'd imagine you'd have good luck at craft stores as well.

Thank you all for the responses! I think my first thing will be to check walmart for a type of felt I like. If not, I might check lowes or home depot for those sheets Grobe suggested. I'll post some pictures as soon as I can. Keep in my I made each piece with my bare hands...they're not spectacular by any stretch of the imagination. (they're also only black/white)

Aww, how cool! I do pottery as well and I've been thinking of making some type of chess set as well. I can't decide whether I want to do a traditional design, or a fun themed one- lotr, zelda, mario, animal/plant, etc.

Any pictures of yours? Don't worry, that's the point of handmade anything, it will never look exactly the same!
