Did you bought that on September 2?

I ordered several sets between September 2nd and 4th, but the "Labor40" coupon was valid until yesterday.

The third and final set from the "LABOR40" sale I probably like the most. The "Reproduced Antique Series Dublin Pattern" in Rosewood with a 4" king. I paid €89 for this set - really, really happy with this one. The weight fits the one given on the homepage, the execution is practically flawless.

These pieces do need a 2.15" to 2.25" field size board [shown: 2.15"]. The grain on the black pieces here is very lively.

The weights for black: King=71g, Queen=61g, Bishop=47g, Knight=47g, Rook=41g.

The grains looks so beautiful in this board. What kind of burl is this?

Mohan_Kumar_Chess

Awesome pictures and an exquisite chess set. I'm tempted. Heck, I missed that labor day sale. I'm now eager to increase my collection and thinking to put down some euros after October fest.

Great buy!

Thanks. Chessbazaar have a sale on all the time. Really, all the time. 20% off of their usual 20% off you'll always get. But when they announce a special holiday sale, it pays off if you wait for a few days - and then you'll get 35% or 40% off from US$99 product value upwards.

If there's one thing I'm critical of about CB it's their super-aggressive marketing.  I don't mind having to add glue to a few felt bottoms with every set. Being reminded of having an item in my cart three times(!) after I've already bought it, *that* I do mind!

Sound ,  How do you display your many chess set's & boards !

I was narrowing down to buy a chess set which has 4" plus king size in Sheesham wood. So out of the chess companies discussed which one is the best, like can you rate out of 5?

CB or HoS or RCM?

I'd say that unless CB have one of their 35/40% sales on items from US$99 [as in their recent Labor Day sale], Royal Chess Mall offer the best value. The edge that CB have over RCM is in the range/diversity of sets - e.g. RCM offer no bone Staunton sets, and not nearly as many Soviet/European antique reproductions. OTOH, RCM IMHO have a slight edge on quality for money.

Which style are you looking for, and for which budget? Note that Sheesham pieces often vary widely in terms of brightness, which can be distracting. I would suggest rosewood as a better, if slightly more expensive, option..

Just one example: RCM offer a very nice 4.1" Pro Staunton set in boxwood & rosewood, well weighted at 1.5kg for the whole set of 34. The eBay offer promises great value: https://www.ebay.de/itm/4-1-Professional-Staunton-HolzSchachfiguren-Nur-Set-gewichtetes-Rosenholz/153154391741?hash=item23a8b68ebd:g:6FgAAOSwyshcSWQP

I pondered buying this set, but since I already own several Staunton-style sets in various wood combinations, I'm not sure I really need it [Of course, once one starts collecting sets, need becomes irrelevant at some point. Do women really need dozens of pairs of shoes?]

I now own more than a half dozen sets each from CB and RCM, and since you're based in India, HoS is no real alternative.

The set in question looks exactly like the CB set, https://www.chessbazaar.com/the-popular-staunton-series-chess-pieces-in-rose-box-wood-4-1-king.html.  I bought one for significantly more than $99, and I still thought it was a great value.

"Perfect" is a very high standard for a wooden set.  I doubt if it's realistic for CB - the set I recently purchased was acceptable, but far from perfect, and it was not a "slightly imperfect chess set."

Chessbazaar are having a 10% sale on their already discounted "slightly imperfect chess sets":

I've never ordered an "slightly imperfect" set from them before, but there was one set among them I wanted to try before, so I ordered it under these conditions. One of their lower-priced ones, to test. I hope "slightly imperfect" doesn't mean that a knight its missing its head or something.

Unfortunately there are very few reviews on their imperfect sets to make an informed choice.

You could have helped me this time too 😜

Walnut!! How Walnut is this light in colour?

Good question looks more like maple

I have dealt on and off with chessbazaar for a good number of years now. Most of the sets I had purchased were crafted by excellent carvers although finishing and sealing posed some problems with some crimson colored sets that were discontinued or made going forward with a lacquer sealing to prevent color bleeding. Back in 2016  there was a thread that began with the title "Post your chess sets" and on page #10 on the very last entry was a picture generated by a chess.com member named RobertoLM. He had posted a picture of a set that was likened by many including myself but there wasn't a proper name to it only this moniker "Mezquite-Sacred Fir. México" and this photo pictured below.

I wanted to see if chess bazaar could make me a custom set using this photo and I had asked to make the pawns a bit beefier as the pawns of the Ultimate chess set to compliment the heft of the major pieces. They had agreed to make the set but the first photo of what they had procured did not have the pawns I wanted. Here is what the first set looked like a week ago.

A very nice almost identical reproduction from just one photo I had furnished to the design team just not quite to my liking. I had proceeded to swap numerous emails until I had gotten what I had requested in my original order. As you can well see the Ultimate chess set style pawns seem to compliment the major pieces quite well. Here are those photos.

I think they did a great job with the fulfillment of this custom order. For those who are still leary of their business practices you are entitled to your opinion but this has been a good experience despite some of the issues I have experienced with them in the past. I will definitely enjoy playing with this set.

Made of boxwood and sheesham and it has kingside stamping as well.

Job well done CB. I'm a satisfied consumer.

Glad things worked out.Nice set.

We I am impressed they will do custom work like that. And they did a great job of it!

I also agree, they look like they really took some time with that set. They must have made more to sell?

QtoQlevel3

Thank you Magic and Forked for the comments. @ Tundra I believe the set will be available  for purchase but with the pawns of the first set of pictures not the Ultimate pawns. They're decent and look like the pawns in the photo rendered for crafting but I like a heftier looking set this is why I made it a point to get what I had ordered and they complied rather nicely. I haven't received them yet but they should be in the 40-ish ounce weight scale give or take a few ozs. Perfect for blitz games and not too many delicate points to break off from an accidental drop or rough handling.

As for the actual "imperfections", I did notice minor tool marks on just a few of the pieces, but nothing truly significant - for that price.

Normally I don't fancy sheesham as a material for black chessmen. It's probably less prone to cracking than e.g. ebony, but I don't appreciate the wider discrepancies in grain & brightness. The differences here are no different than the ones on my few other sheesham sets - from any source. So I wouldn't count the fact that one of the pawn is significantly darker than the others as an "imperfection".

There seems not much imperfections in the pictures. And better than the economy sets, Luxury sets like Indian Chetak II, Collector's Staunton, Alexander's Bucephalus, Indian American, California Chrome Staunton, Caballus Staunton, Ruffian American Staunton, Admiral Staunton  all available for more than 70% - 75% off and on top of that 10% more discount.
The imperfections like tool mark, discolouration, etc will appear over normal use unless you didn't play and have them in display. So, these slight imperfections doesn't matter. But if there is variation in height or if some pawns or rooks are stouter than others then they may be easily noticeable and many don't like that.

Gamegrunt

I too obtained this set and enjoy it a lot.  The rosewood is very dark, essentially black except in natural lighting.  I would be concerned about this set's durability - the king's finial must be guarded against damage and the rook crenelations are brittle - a friend knocked one off of a table, it fell on a tile floor, and a crenelation broke off (CB replaced it for $18.00).  I have been meaning to post pictures of the set on various boards that I own and perhaps I will soon.   Your pictures are beautiful, by the way.

forked_again

It looks like a lovely wood to use for the dark pieces.

Hello,

I`m from Germany and a collector of Chess pieces and I follow this interesting thread here for a long time. Please excuse my bad English ;-)

I ordered four different piece sets from the Indian Company "Royal Chess Mal". For example a Dubrovnik Set, etc.

Then

crooked King

I ordered the following Set:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/1950-sowjetischen-Grosmeister-Schachfiguren-nur-festgelegt-Antiqued-Boxwood/153498133690?hash=item23bd33a4ba:g:iwEAAOSw3Rhc5Stn

When it arrived I detected a problem with the crooked black King.

bad King

Okay this could happen, but I think, that they should take a careful look BEFORE sending the pieces.I contaced them and asked for a replacement King.

Now it`s getting annoying. Here is a copy of my last email to them. If something went wrong and you want to get a replacement, then this only possible if you order an ADDITIONAL new piece set????

Please take a look to my mail to them. I must warn every lover of chess pieces to order from them. They don`t offer any support if something went wrong!

Dear Sir

We check from your feedback, your disappointment regarding the transaction.
We are more than willing to re-send you the replacement via Indiapost, if you require. We only suggested you to combine ship the replacement with another item to avoid any delays again with Germany customs.
We wait for your reply.

My answer:

I summarize.

I bought four sets from you, all paid in advance.
I've trusted you to be respectable and to send your customers decent goods for good money.

For a set, at least 90.-EURO expensive, you've sent me a faulty set. That can happen, but what is your reaction? I should order another set, just to get the replacement figure ?????

Then I offer you to send me another set including the exchange king. This time I think it's fair that you kick in advance and send the goods first. For example, what should I do if the Lardy contains errors? Order new figures again?

As written in my last mail, I will pay via Paypal immediately if everything arrives in good condition.

If you do not trust good customers then you do not. Finally send me the replacement figure for my set. And so that it arrives here too.

Finally, if I do not get my replacement, I will contact EBAY directly. Such providers as you have lost nothing at EBAY. Selling defective goods and then ignoring the customer, that is not possible. I will not buy anything from you anymore.

Best wishes

Jörg from Germany

Is it a French Lardy Set?

forked_again

You can just say "I am not planning to order any additional sets in the near future.  Please ship the piece ASAP and send me the tracking information."

Simple.

It makes sense that they would want to save shipping costs but they are not requiring that you buy another set.
