My New Tournament Chess Set (Wood!)

Sort:
German_MagnusCarlsen

One of my Christmas presents this year was a wood chess set for tournament use . I had picked it out two weeks ago. I ordered the board on amazon, the pieces on chess house, and the bag on USCF Sales. With shipping, I spent about $130 all together.

Product Details:

I bought the pieces on sale at chesshouse.com for $50. The original set only costs $40, but I paid ten dollars extra to get extra queens. The set is called Wood Staunton Club Chess Pieces. The king is 3.75 inches tall and the pieces are a replication of the usual plastic chess pieces that one would find at the local chess club. Here is a link to buy the set: http://www.chesshouse.com/3_75in_Wood_Staunton_Club_Chess_Set_p/g47195kdf.htm

I bought the board on amazon for $40. It has 2.25 inch squares which is perfect for tournaments; the board's squares are exactly the same size as the ones found on the standard vinyl boards that are used in tournaments. The manufacturer is a Polish company called Wegiel. It is a very high quality board for only a fraction of the price of similar boards that House of Staunton sells. I bought the bag at USCF Sales for $40 because I had a great coupon code that compensated for the shipping charge. It is simply a great bag. Here is a link to buy it: http://www.uscfsales.com/chess-bags/standard-chessboard-carrying-bag.html

Yep, have the same board and similar pieces myself.  Very happy with them.  Anyone that wants a good full-size wooden board without breaking the bank should check this one out.  It's really nice for the price.

You have a very nice set here.

I have that same color of board in both folding and the solid model you have.

I also use it for tournament play.  I think you are going to enjoy it quite a bit.

I see that you also have a Chronos II clock.  That's nice.

And you sure can't beat that set for that price.  And it looks good on the board, very nice.

Because the board is veneer, you might need to put corner protectors on it at some time.  Most hardware stores sell them.  They cost $3 or $4 for a pack of four.  I have found the standard brass looks great with this board.

Enjoy your play with this set, and Merry Christmas.

I'll look into getting corner protectors. Thanks for the recommendation Eyechess.

Cool!

How much was the clock? Looking to buy one just like it.

And pehaps the board too.

I have one of a bit higher quality also from T.H.O.S, but I used it so much the squares are peeling xD lol

Thanks for posting!

Question: Does the bag hold the pieces too? If not, where do you keep them?

The clock was $115 on wholesale chess. It doesn't get any cheaper than that: http://www.wholesalechess.com/shop/chess_clocks/chronos_chess_clocks

The bag that I have does not hold the pieces; I am just keeping them in another chess bag that holds my vinyl board. There is a bag however that is the same except it holds the pieces and is made of a slightly more expensive material. It costs 20 dollars more though: http://www.uscfsales.com/chess-bags/deluxe-chessboard-carrying-bag.html

The bag I have does have a pocket, but it isn't meant to hold pieces. It is great for holding something smaller, such as a scorebook and some pencils.

That is a nice looking board & set for sure. I have about 3 Wegial boards that are like new after 30 years of play. Wegial is often over looked for boards & sets. I have the 3.5 inch King Staunton Wegiel set around 30 years old also. No warping or cracked pieces after all that time is really good IMO.!

Is it still possible to get the board anymore? I have looked around and they are like 200+ dollars for me.

I don't know what shipping cost to Australia but you can buy this board and the same style in different woods for ~ $100 USD. There are often discount codes in the 15%-20% range which will drop that price also. Wholesalechess
