New chess set - Antipodean Rosewood Staunton

I have hit the buy now button! Oh well.

Just wondering if anyone else has this set and can comment on it. I have my eye on a few sets but this one really caught my eye, and I think it will go really nice with my walnut DGT board

I've never been a fan of the contrasting colours on Kings/Bishops (personal thing though).

I was tempted with this set recently.

@MegaLumberjack I like the looks of the Leningrad set. However it was the Rooks and Bishops that kept me from getting it. I did however use the same Knights for my custom set. I did a review of the set last year. I called it the Russian Bride.

I have to say, for £99 (al be it with limited experience and only a few other sets to benchmark against), the quality and detail are fantastic!

It's a very fine looking version of the Zagreb.....I just got a similar one in Padauk and Boxwood,from The Chess Store....Enjoy it.

Hi. It was from Chesssets.co.uk which looked to be the same company as regency I believe (I am on my phone so can’t send link at moment). It set me back £110 in the sale.

Not sure if great value as I am still new to the physical buying and collecting phase of the game but I recently returned a Zagreb set that ended up being very poor quality and the knights looked nothing like the ones in the photos. It was only half this price.

They have just emailed to advise it could be with me before Xmas as has just been dispatched so I will pop some photos of the set.

I was a little worried when I checked the king base diameter (can’t quite remember ) but it seemed it’s going to fill most of my DGT squares which are 55mm but that was the board size recommended so hope they are not too crowded. Don’t really want a larger board just yet.

I know the contrasting colours are not for everyone. Took me a while as at first I didn’t like that but started warming to it ha.

You'll have no trouble with the size - My new set has the same King diameter and looks fine on the current 50mm square - 55mm will be perfect (my board is supposedly arriving today!)

What board are you expecting? I have my eye on a "glossy" dark grain board but I dont really want more than one. The idea was to have one main, full size board and thats my DGT and I love it, then collect sets for that board.

I do have the DGT smart board and thats full size but I mainly just use that for quick input of games and analysis.

However, I have recently got back into correspondence chess so probalby will end up with a board to have my long games on!

I bought a set of these two years ago, and really adore them. I believe the board that used to be sold with is now out of stock, a real shame as they go nicely together. Still, very elegant pieces, and feel great to play with. I assume you're shopping through regency. They're great, sent me a replacement piece when I cracked a Knight.

@MadTrevally. Yeah I noticed the matching board recommended was out of stock but like I said not too fussed on buying a new board just yet.

Yes I believe the company I used is part of regency as the website is pretty much identical.

I was just worried after measuring the king base, unless I have my measurements wrong, the base practically fills the 55mm square of my board, however from comments above seems that I don’t need to worry about that, more of an issue now is if they will go nice with the walnut and maple ha.

Either way we shall see tomorrow. Might pop some photos up just in case anyone else wants to see the set on walnut and maple.

Well they arrived and your right. They fit perfect and look great. Only issue is one of the bishops arrived damaged :) I have emailed regency so hopefully they will send a replacement.
