Last year, I’ve finally saved up enough to order a Dubrovnik chess pieces and a custom board for my birthday. Both orders arrived just days apart with the last package from Noj finally in today.

I’ll be focusing on this chess board of mine as there are already dedicated posts with splendid pictures about these chess pieces. I also would like to highlight the excellent services provided by Gregor from Noj.

When choosing the board, I selected the folding board over the flat version. For me, I think it helps to save some space while housing the pieces inside and I wanted something close to the original 1950 board too. So I approached Nathan on Etsy to custom-made one with some modifications. The beautifully crafted 2.25” square board has a brass latch and hinges, and was made of walnut and maple to match those stunning Dubrovnik pieces.

I am so happy that I finally brought it after a long while. Expensive but worth it. Thanks for reading!

Beatiful setup - thanks for sharing!

How much did you pay for that board?

Do you use some sort of padding to protect the pieces when storing them inside the board? I would be worried about the pieces getting damaged while rattling around and colliding.

@ Plaingom: Nice pictures of a wonderful set I am sure! I ordered my dubrovnik II somewhere in October if I remember correctly. My set should be arriving sometime later this week. I'll be doing a short photo review of the set itself on here as well, or at least I intend to.

Horace

Very lovely.  Great idea having a custom board made for such a nice set.

@CatoWeeksbooth, Thank you! It cost me $275. Yes to your second question. As the pieces only move sideways along the long side, I throw in a small towel to keep them in place - it works for me, so I’m not having much issues with it. Let me know if you have some suggestions to share :)

@maik1988, Thank you! I’m looking forward to see yours. Did you get walnut/maple version or the stained version?

@Horace, Thank you!
maik1988

@ Plaingom: Walnut/maple for me too. I considered the red stain for a long time, but I liked it in some pictures I saw and a bit less in others, so I went with natural. It's been a long wait - about five and a half months - but hopefully worth it!

That board and pieces are perfect together.

Welcome to the Official Noj Dubrovnik Club.

@Chesspage1, Thank you!

@maik1988, Similar situation here too, I was considering brown stained version due its durability (maple wood). But I like walnut wood, so went ahead with the natural combination. I ordered mine early September, so about 8 months for me. But I believe the long wait was worth it. Noj work is better than most pieces I’ve seen personally to date and the reviews here showed positive feedback. Let us see yours once you got it!

@Eyechess, Thank you!

Great combo! I hunted for a vintage folding board with storage for a while, and finally found one. But the idea was the same--honor the original concept.

Received my set today. I'm absolutely stunned by the quality of it. I'll try to take some pictures later. The finish on these pieces really is something else!

The small border around the chessbord is not of my taste but the overall set is good looking.

The wood the pieces are made of looks very nice.

These are some pics of the set I received. The photos are not very good, given the artificial lighting and all, but I wanted to share them anyhow. These pieces are just about perfect on many levels - balance, shape, cut - and they feel fantastic to play with. I just found myself sitting down and moving them around, just for the sheer joy of it. The one downside they have, if any, is that they don't photograph well. These really look much better in person.

@ Plaingom: Sorry to hi-jack your thread! happy.png

@cgrau, Thank you for kind words! Mind sharing with us the vintage folding board you had found happy.png.
@Bfighter4935, Thank you for kind words! ! I was thinking of a wider edge with notation initially, but went with this design as it prevents direct contact with other surface, which tend to result in scratches over time.
@maik1988, No worries, this forum is for us to share our good stuff wink.png. I agree they look better in person, and those pieces look fantastic on your board! Now, you got me itching for a Durbovnik II. I think it will be a long while before I can get my second set.

maik1988

You mean a second one from Noj? I'm sort of fortunate there, in the sense that it was always the dubrovnik II that appealed to me most. I'm in less danger there so to speak! Although I'm also not rejecting the idea of purchasing another set from them in the future. Gregor was really courteous througout, and the pavasovic and tal sets look like beauties as well.

I played with my girlfriend yesterday, who is an occasional player, just a little bit better than a complete beginner. Her comment was that initially she wasn't too impressed, but when she started handling the pieces they started to grow on her. They "make you love them" is what she said. I think I agree with that thought. They're very tactile. The tal set especially also looks like that, with those broad bases. Perhaps I am in trouble after all...

maik1988

Also, @ Plaingom: Thank you for the compliment. The board I got from an American retailer. I love it but it has since slightly warped. It's not a big problem, as we usually either play on carpet with bean bags to sit on, or on the bed or couch. If I had to pick a board especially for these pieces, perhaps I would go with this one: 469.jpg

That's from the Noj website. It's a veneer board of elm root and maple made by a small scale German manufacturer. It retails for about 100 euro, and both the maple and walnut would look great on it. Here's another picture:

I might eventually pick it up, but haven't decided yet.

Late to the party. Love the set, Plaingom! I'd love to play with something similar one day. Thanks for the beautiful pictures!

nice set!!

Bfighter4935

@maik1988: Your board is thick, clean, minimalist. Very nice wood block.

Plaingom
@Burke3gd, Thank you for your kind words! I can relate to you, took me awhile before I took the plunge and brought this set.

@Fer8799, Thank you for your kind words!

@maik1988, That board looks good. You might also want to check out Andrei from MTM Wood too, I read that he makes excellent chess boards (https://mtmwood.com/en/chessboards.php). There are many others too, I got my Etsy after much search.
Ah, so you are eyeing the minimalistic BCE too. Will you be taking the steel base version as seen in your picture? That looks cool, if you will to ask me.
