I had to go with the Staunton Castle version to buy. It was more expensive, but the accuracy of the knight is top notch over the other sets. And no 2 year wait.

Sure & why not if its the set you like , Just down to taste & $$$$ , For others its the NOJ , No right or wrong , just how deep are your pockets , Now as for accuracy that s debatable

As no modern day rendition has it right ,

It’s the difference between “well made” and “world class”. The Staunton Castle set isn’t bad, but the finish, craftsmanship, consistency and excessive weight would be very telling if you compared both in your hand.

It’s like owning a fast Mustang/Challenger/Camaro. On paper, it’s about as fast as Porsche 911 - but try driving both on a track, at flat out speeds on the straights and turns, and see which one you will pick then happy.png

edit: sets from India have a distressing tendency to deviate from posted photos, as well. Good luck with your purchase!

Thank God everyone has their own taste otherwise everyone would want to marry my wife. 😁😁😁

What is the current wait time for NOJ Minceta?

So chess board wise - I am looking to have one made in the vintage Jaques style with the raised edges.

Is 53mm square size optimal for my NOJ Minceta set and what would be a good wood to use for this if I get the option?
Krames
I think 53mm is perfect!
lotsoblots

Yeah, I agree with Krames, though either 50mm or 55mm would be beautiful, too, IMO. happy.png

60mm sq is the size for the original chess board & works very well for my Dubrovnik chess set due to the wide base . I picked up my chess board for around 20 euros made in the 50;s and it was vintage Jaques style .

So if I’m having it made I should go for 53mm square size for the NOJ set?

Also for wood options/pricing I got this message:

I’d recommend Peruvian walnut and either maple or birch with mahogany for the border. The board should cost around $225 plus $90 for shipping.

I asked for an option similar to this style of antique Jaques style board:

@shaun that color combination sounds superb! Please post pictures on whatever you finalize on. Also congrats on your Minceta!! Oh btw I have a Peruvian and maple board from CWW, if you want me to send some pics with my Minceta on it let me know? May help your decision?

Yes please - that would be very helpful!

shaunlawler

If you could also please confirm the square size with the picture - that would be great.

No problem, the inside playing field is Peruvian Walnut and Maple in 2.25" squares. The outside border is America Walnut with thin 1/4 Maple border. You might be able to compare or get an idea of the color differences. I put a lamp over the board and pieces for the light. For me I think Black Walnut or Peruvian Walnut works really well with the dark brown stain NOJ provides. But honestly this stain is very versatile, will work with a lot of wood combinations. I have a few more different boards so if you have another combo you are thinking about let me know ill see if i have it and ill post them. Hopes this helps -- S

Oh not to confuse things but another combo that may look nice is Bolivian Rosewood. I have this on order but w/ Birds Eye Maple with CWW. May look a little busy for some people taste tho? If i get this in soon ill post them w/ the brown stain NOJ Minceta for you to get an idea of what it could look like.

Placed my order with CWW.

It will be a Jaques style antique board with raised mahogany edges, with Peruvian walnut and birch squares - 53mm.

Hopefully have it in the next few weeks and will post pictures once received.

NOJ set also due in Q3 this year so hopefully in next couple of months…

53mm sq is way to tight , even on 55mm sq i found tight , based on the four pawn rule fit on a sq , on 60mm sq the base of my pawns over hang with the four pawn rule .

It’s just personal preference as long as the pieces fit within the square.

I also prefer a tighter fit, rather than having too much space within the squares around the pieces.

@MCH818 shared a picture in the first page of his NOJ set on a 51mm board which looked really good so I am sure 53mm would also be absolutely fine.

Got this progress picture from CWW yesterday - looking good so far! Just need the raises/rounded edges to see how it will look when finished.
