NYC Chess stores

I will be in NYC next weekend (July 20/21) and would like to stop in at a chess store or two to see if I might find something to purchase.

Any ones that people can recommend? I will most likely be there Sunday only so if they are not open Sunday please let me know that if you know.

Thanks for any info you can share.

Just over a page of chess books (14 items in total) - wow! Is that really all they have??

No idea, I usually buy my chess books through Amazon. They are in NY, and a chess store, and I can recommend them as I've shopped online from them before. I've never been there though. I'm sure there are plenty of members from NY who can recommend stores to visit.

Thanks strngdrvnthng - Massapequa is a little outside of the range I am going (more Long Island than NYC) but I appreciate it and will keep it in mind.

I too would have thought there might have been more response form the NYC members. Not giving up hope though and the suggestion from Crazychessplaya looks like it might be a good one also.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Which store is that schack_2?

I am mostly looking to purchase a set or two.

If you're going to purchase chess pieces I suggest you check out www.houseofstaunton.com and www.chessbazaar.com I have purchased pieces from both and can recommend both highly. Don't forget to keep us posted and attach pics of your latest aquisitions : )

So it is not open on Sunday.  R.Sava specified that the store must be open on Sunday.

Missed that...just as well you brought it up. I would have felt really bad had he travelled all that way only find the store locked and barred. Cheers, John C. : )

Maybe the "Aladdin's Cave" sort of bookshops (bookstores) simply don't exist any more. The equivalent for equestrian books -- J.A.Allen's The Horseman's Bookshop -- was still open in the 1990s but is gone now, presumably because it became uneconomical. [http://www.lrgaf.org/articles/bookshop.htm] It was a great place to spend an afternoon every couple of years.

ETA: There is the London Chess Centre (in London, not NY) - it's half of an Aladdin's Cave at least!
