Bought in an out-of-the-way "antique" store, I was told this is a Cowboy Chess set.  Any thoughts on what when where?  (Set is complete).

Well it sure odd alright.  Cowboy Chess set?   What's it made of and what size are the pieces?  But I hope you report back with whatever you find because that is so odd, it has made me curious.

Oh, are there any sort of marque or trademart or manufacturer markings anywhere on it?

Pawn = 1 & 7/8 inch high, King = 4 inch high, horse and rook = 2 1/2 inch height.  They have no marks of any kind indicating mfg process.  Some parts appear to be "machined" on a primitive lathe, holes drilled but a bit inacurately placed in relationship to each other.  The interiors are rough.  It may be made of ivory (so I was told) or walrus tusk (so I guess).  Decorations are hand carved but the artist seemed "careless" in placing them.

Looks like a classical Mexican Pulpit set. Probably bone, not ivory. Here's a pic of a similar pulpit set at the online chess museum, and a link to another one:

FrankHelwig, Thankyou much.

No offense, I am being serious; are these chess pieces actually meant to be played with or are they just for admiring?

Played, though I would not suggest throwing them at your partner when you lose.
