Official Staunton - 1850 London Exact Replica

Hello everyone,

after what felt like an eternity, today my set of the 1850 London Exact Replica (3.5" Ebony & Boxwood Chessmen) finally arrived. I was lucky enough to get the last of the unweighted sets, when I ordered it on Thursday the 25th of April 2024 late in the night (in Germany). Unfortunately, I needed to sell some of my other sets that I bought very cheap in the past in order to be able to refinance this set, since I am still attending University and don´t have a regular income. However, I was more than happy to do this, after seeing the first pictures of some of the pieces at the end of 2023. So now this is my first set of chessmen with a kings height of "just" 3.5". Other sets I still own are all between 3.625" and 3.75". Also I opted for the unweighted version, simply because it costed 100€ less and I didn´t own such a set until now.

I have to admit, I was pretty surprised how small they appeared, when I first took the pieces up. Especially the very delicately carved bishop. Of course, the absence of weights added to this impression of mine, since the pieces just feel so much different to my other sets. Whatever the case may be, I am very impressed with the quality of the carving and especially (!) the polishing. In the past I was unfortunate enough to pay a similar amount for a Sinquefield Cup-Repro that IMO wasn´t finished carefully. This isn´t the case here. All of the pieces are polished to a very high level, just to my liking! Also the felts are applied very good, something that some manufacturers just don´t seem to get right.

Here are some meassurments regarding the weight of the sets:

White pieces: 87g

  • King: 23g
  • Queen: 16g
  • Bishop: 9g
  • Knight: 15g
  • Rook: 16g
  • Pawn: 8g

Black pieces: 114g

  • King: 30g
  • Queen: 22g
  • Bishop: 13g
  • Knight: 18g
  • Rook: 21g
  • Pawn: 10g

TOTAL weight: 201g

Here some pictures. Not the best, but you understand that I was eager to play through some games (maybe I will update some in the future when I am outside, but feel free to post pictures of your 1850 sets!):

All in all, I absolutely love the set and don´t regret selling two of my other sets in order to buy this one. This is in fact my first set from Official Staunton and despite the set being 40€ more expensive due to Brexit... I am very pleased with the quality of the set. I am looking forward to maybe buy another exact reproduction like this but maybe in 4.0" and weighted again haha in the future. I believe there are great times coming to those of us, that want to have more or less the "same" thing as those beautiful Jaques pieces from the 19th century, whitouth spending a fortune and letting the set get it´s own unique scars over the decades. I want to thank Carl for this, who (to my knowledge) is the first to sell/produce such a beauty of a replica. The set is well worth it´s money and the only thing I am hoping for is that sets like this will become more available in the future and not so much limited like this set (75 in total).

PS: I am also very grateful that this set was being produced with natural boxwood instead the antiqued boxwood, which I personally would never spend more than 50€ for. But that´s of course personal preference.

Absolutely! Just be aware (in case you don´t own a 3.5" set already) that it could be somewhat of a change and a little bit of getting used to.

Very nice!

Are you concerned about chipping the pieces when you're putting them in that box? I

To be honest, a little bit. But Not too much, because of the missing weights. But I still try to put the bishops and kings on top. Also I am not moving them around in that box, so I believe there is not too much to worry about.

Nice looking set , 4.4 club or 4 inch sets were for the rich back then . Now it's a market full of them . wink

The set is definitely a looker and will catch the attention of anyone who sees it. Thanks for sharing the great photos. (Plants could use some love though.)

That position has to be a Paul Morphy game.

Correct haha! P. Morphy - E. Morphy, New Orleans, 1856.

Oh! I didn't even notice the first time I saw this thread a couple of weeks ago that it looks like a folding board? Which one is it?

That looks like a really lovely set!

It is one from Rechapados Ferrer that I bought at Niggemann in Germany three years ago. Similar to this one: https://www.schachversand.de/schachbrett-nussbaum-klappbar-fg-50mm-1630.html but with 55mm squares.

I would love such a Jaques-like board however, with the same finish, wood and everything…
