Official World Chess set spacing question

Sort:
againseriously

Hi -- I just got my World Chess official set (board and pieces), and I was surprised by how tight the spacing feels compared to my other large set, which follows the USCF standard. I don't mind it, and actually it's a nice contrast, but I do wonder, is this set really representative of the spacing typically used in professional FIDE/international play?

Pawnerai

Only a handful of forum members have the official World Chess set. Even fewer have the official World Chess board.

I believe the official World Chess board has 50mm squares. Can you confirm the measurement with your board? If this is correct. Then, yes, it is somewhat crowded and not representative of what was used in the Championship. The Championship was played on a 55mm square DGT board.

Thanks Pawnerai — Yes, the board that came with the set has 50mm squares. If that’s not the actual typical championship spacing then it’s annoying, but not enough to return the board (I could still use a nice 50mm board like this). But it does mean I’ll probably also get a larger board in order to have something more accurate.

You might want to check out the non-electronic DGT board with 55mm squares to complete the World Chess Championship look and feel. €59.84 for Non EU residents. If I didn't already have a nice 55mm board, I'd be all over it. thumbup.png

Thanks again — I would probably have gone for that, except just before seeing your post I ordered a Rechapados Ferrer walnut/maple board with 54mm squares.

I have to say if the Official World Championship Board is not the one they actually used, that is a problem, that is called false advertising. I mean wtf?

In the World Chess Championship matches, the board used is actually the DGT board, NOT the board that is shown with the pieces in the World Chess website. The latter has a darker wood and a white / black small pentagram indicating the "side." However, the DGT boards are a bit clearer and considerably thicker (both in height and on the margins). Most importantly, the DGT board (seen in the pictures shared above) has 55mm squares, while the WorldChess board has 50mm squares.

ulfbert

Here, you can see the DGT logo to the side. The photo is taken from WorldChess' own website(!!) from the Karjakin--Carlsen match. The exact same (DGT) board was used for the match with Caruana in 2018.

ulfbert

And here, you can see the WorldChess board, with a darker tone for the wood, smaller squares, the "side" markers (hexagons), and a thinner board overall.

Unfortunately the DGT non electronic board appears to be out of stock everywhere. I'm hoping it reappears later in the year when things return to normal.

Here are the official regulations:

https://www.fide.com/FIDE/handbook/Standards_of_Chess_Equipment_and_tournament_venue.pdf

"The side of the square should measure 5 to 6 cm. Referring to 2.2
the side of a square should be at least twice the diameter of a
pawn’s base (it means four paws on one square)."

Thanks tygxc. Yes, the board that World Chess currently sells (with the 50mm squares) matches the small end of regulations and fits the king well. But for my taste, the other pieces are a bit crowded. That's actually one thing I really like about this set, is that there's less size disparity between the king and the other pieces than is common in a lot of Staunton-based designs. It gives the whole thing a very substantial and unified feel (to my taste). But it does mean that sizing the board relative to the king alone is especially problematic here. In any event, I received the 55mm Rechapados Ferrer board this morning, and on that board the set meets my size/spacing preferences exactly. I think I'll be very happy using this as my main game set, at least until I drift up to the top of the Noj waiting list...

The fit is not relative to the king: 4 pawns should fit in 1 square.

I always loved those non-e DGT boards. Too bad I am not in the market for a board. I would definitely snatch up one of the two left in stock.

ulfbert

I'd be cautious about the "non-electronic" DGT boards though. Back in 2011, I purchased directly from the DGT website (a Dutch company) a set and board, listed as non-electronic DGT board and the German Knight Stauton pieces, and the picture shown was one exactly as the electronic DGT boards and pieces. HOWEVER, when I received the set in my house, the pieces were good but the board was NOT exactly a DGT-minus-the-electronics, as I expected, but a very high class similar (regular) board from Spain. It was a but thinner (thus, lighter) and had a smaller space between the outer edges of board and the beginning of the squares. It had 55mm sized squares, at least, but the border line around the board was of a light color wood, not darker as in the real DGTs. So.... my point is... beware of these non-e DGT boards offered online because if the company that makes them does not sell (REAL) non-e DGT boards, I highly doubt anyone else would. The only option would be someone who may be selling an older DGT that broke and doesn't work electronically anymore. But that should be specified in the ad.

@Ulfbert Thanks for the info! Now that you mention it the non-e board is a bit thinner. I remember wondering about this when I saw the one posted by @BananaMoon many years back. He posted it again last week. See post #62 in https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/new-offering-from-noj-dubrovnik-minceta?page=4. In his version the board is thin. The line between the border and the squares is dark unlike the one you received. Also, I read the non-e board was made by Rechapados Ferrer so that makes sense you received one from Spain. Do you have a photo of the one you received? I am curious what the line looks like.

ulfbert

Here's two pictures, one with the original set it came with, and the second one with a new set of pieces I recently bought online.

@Ulfbert Thanks for the photos! I like the board a lot. It looks very nice. The thickness of the board is fine too. I can see what you meant by the light colored line and the smaller border. Overall the board looks great but not if you were expecting a version similar to the DGT e-board. I guess it would be food for thought if I ever wanted to order one.
