1899 Benetfink & Co catalogue - The "London made" chessmen shown below can be identified as "FH Ayres' make." This conclusion is based on the prior 1897 Benetfink catalogue with the same illustrations and similar descriptions. According to the descriptions in this 1899 catalogue, Ayres made "Ebonized" versions with "Loaded Bases" of Staunton pattern (on the right). There are also Ebonized St George's pattern chessmen (top right) and in rosewood (top left). Ayres even made cheaper and unweighted Staunton versions with polished mahogany boxes ( left).

Blumberg & Co. / aka "B & Co. London (Wholesale)" - London and Paris based seller of British, foreign and fancy goods. The business had houses at Cannon Street, London and Rue de Bondy, Paris. The founders were described as of "German extraction" and imported fancy articles from countries such as France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany.

Identification as "B & Co. London (Wholesale)" is based on the copyright of material from the 1862 book "The Club Adventures of Alderman Akeinside." Blumberg & Co were known to have sold clocks, fancy boxes, musical boxes, and musical instruments. Hinges stamped with "B & Co. Improved" have been found on vanity boxes and boxes containing the chronometers and concertinas by other makers. Blumberg & Co. also sold chess sets, as seen in an 1864 advertisement.

"B & Co. London (Wholesale)" book: The Club Adventures of Alderman Akeinside:

Blumberg & Co, 1862 copyright owner of "Alderman Akeinside", from UK Kew National Archives:

["...from the Celebrated House of Blumberg & Co...", chessmen and boards, Newry Telegraph 1864 ]:

[ Blumberg & Co, from The Public Ledge 1872]:

[Blumberg & co, from Penny Illustrated paper 1892]:

Blumberg & Co.'s large establishment and business, (then operating as Berens, Blumberg & co) 1856 Illustrated London News: "We have read in novels of people who have sold every-thing, 'from a ship to a thimble.' The establishment we describe is something of the same sort - from a sixpenny salt-cellar to a £500 chamber organ. The dealer in fancy wares can be satisfied to any amount. There are here articles for every hour of the day and every rotation of life... and the recreation of the evening." "..their annual sales go into hundreds of thousands of pounds sterling..."

Blumberg & co - 1872 The international guide to British and foreign merchants 1872. Clocks, watches, musical instruments:

The Concertina Museum collection, "B & Co Improved" hinges on Wheatstone concertina, likely retailed by Blumberg & Co. :

The Concertina Museum Collection, "B & Co." hinges on a Prowse concertina, again likely retailed by Blumberg:

Bonham's auction of a chronometer by Morris Tobias with "B & Co Improved" box hinges :

In the book Marine Chronometers at Greenwich by Jonathan Betts, an 1858 chronometer (by Brockbank & Atkins) in a similar looking box with "B & Co Improved" hinges:

Which one(s) do you need further reference for? Happy to provide. Over the years, I have used Archive (though this site is down now), BNA, Google Books, Gallica, Museum of Play, Mechanics Institute (for the Chess Voice above) and many others. For instance, the Whitty ads are from BNA and were shared privately with two other collectors. Some are of my own collection.

It's usual to mention the source when you post...even from your own collection.

Hi, is there a particular post above that you need help with? Happy to discuss but I am unsure of what you are seeking. If you have some old chess set advertisements you would like to post or share, you are more than welcome in this thread.

No specific post, and looking back I do see a few with sources which is good. Some of these I've seen before during my own research online. I do have a question though...what's BNA?

Some interesting ads and thread.

Thanks. BNA is British Newspaper Archive. It requires a subscription, though, to do more searches.
