Old wooden cigar boxes make great chess piece boxes

Cheap too on eBay if you look around.

This old box is a classy clubhouse for the chessmen, think I paid $8 on eBay for it

Just a cheap set in there for now.

capnrob9,

Sweet! I like the classic rusticated look.

I scored these two boxes at the local Goodwill for less than $5 each. You never know what you can find at your local 2nd hand shops.

Light (9.25" x 7.25") leatherette -

Enclosed is a small 3" ebonized set I call "Stubby Noir". Foam inserts make for a rattle-free transport.

Heavy wood (9.5" x 7.5") -

The 3.75" plastic Cavalier set.

And for easy transport, I carry the above boxes in a small, wide mouth Craftsman tool bag.

As you can see, it easily accommodates my clock and scoring book.

The bag also works with a large 12.5" coffin box (4" set with clock and scoring book).

Great thread, Cap and Lou. I just bought a very nice cherry humidor for under $25. It will house a 1950's dog-face knight Bohemia set I just picked up.

Nice. Considering the cost of commerically available chess storage boxes (I bought a few for my most expensive sets), buying 2nd hand just makes sense. I'd rather spend my money on chess sets instead of boxes.

Got this one in the mail today from eBay.

Yup! But isn't it cool when you find a box that just fits those pieces and looks good too?

Especially when the boxes cost next to nothing, so it doesn't eat into my chess set budget.

Also available at Home Depot.

You're a GENIUS. I had to dig this post up from the depths but had to say Thanks Laughing. I received FOUR of these nice wooden DEEP boxes for $39 shipped! I can stand my Soviet sets up (in storage) and only the pawns have to lay down. Just a slight wood scent and that is all - WHEW !! Cheers -Ronbo

Ronbo, great score, congrats!

cgrau, here's a cousin to your cherry humidor that houses a Soviet grossmeister set. Notice how roomy it is considering the size of the grossmeister. One of the nice things about the humidor is that the cedar scent helps to treat the musty smell of an older set. I know it did wonders for this one. It was quite stinky.

Don't overlook plastic boxes which are excellent,  available on amazon for 6.57 and free shipping for prime members.

My wife said just yesterday that she doesn't need this one anymore. Makes it convenient to keep the red and black Latvian set close by on the bookshelf.

If you have a cigar store nearby, they often sell their empty boxes for 1-2 dollars apiece, without regard to how classy they are. My local store sells them for a dollar apiece.

Great tip!
