Ownership Review - Chessbazaar's 1904 Cambridge Springs International Congress Tournament Chess Set

It is a very nice set.

I know that some of the Soviet chess sets otherwise of Staunton pattern, in an effort to be "free of religious symbolism", don't just avoid the cross on the King, but also the mitre on the Bishop. Although the shape of the Staunton Bishop is so highly stylized that it has very little resemblance to a real Bishop's mitre for those who object to that sort of thing.

Manfred,

Sorry I hadn't seen this thread sooner as your display is very nice and I couldn't agree with you more on the quality of reproduction and price from CB.  Thank you also for your kind remarks in your review.

I'm anticipating seeing what GM4-U and OS will be offering to improve on this and as TenaciousE said the focus should be on the Knights and a few other minor improvements that would be very warmly received.

GM4-U: As Alan can attest, you can improve on the CB version by focusing on the knight.

Chess Bazaar never seems to get the knights right on the reproduction sets (Dubrovnik, Cavalier, Piatigorsky, Soviet Era set, etc.). They always seem just a little bit off.

My only point was that now there is a better prototype to work from.

Or the real thing.  happy.png

I dare say there's another reason: Russia and many parts of the Eastern Europe were either Orthodox Christianity or had been part of the or influenced by the Ottoman Empire. Hence the finials instead of crosses, and the absence of the mitres on the bishops. As for the bishop, in Russian it's called "Slon" which means "elephant", and in other Slav languages it's translated as "runner" or "messenger", and this is also case for German and Swedish for instance. In French, it's a "fool". Quite clearly it makes no real sense to make the bishop out with a mitre if it's a "runner", "messenger", "fool", "elephant" etc. This is also clearly visible in chess sets from those countries (the bishop doesn't have the cut-out - they're always smooth).

Thanks, alleenkatze. IMO, this is the perfect masterpiece from CB for the hard-to-please type of collectors.

@ chessopera I don't want to be rude. But why post your opinion when you don't have the actual set? Is this a criticism thread, or do you actually believe that you're helping? Do you(StauntonMaster) get some kind of reward points for posting criticism on forums when you have no clue what the actual thing is?

People like you pollute internet discussion forums. If you don't like it, skip it. Move on. You are wasting everyone's time. Get a life!

I believe that since this is your topic you can ban him from this topic. And you can ban any other posters who are not sufficiently full of praise for the set you bought.

Main issues with Chessbazaar sets are: lack of proportion (knights too chunky or the bishop’s base smaller than knight’s), lack of aesthetic quality and incorrect angle cuts. A simple glance is almost always enough to identify a chessbazaar set as most of them have the same character as if made from the same default setting.  Biggest problem is the chess sets look too artificial and unreal. Chessbazaar should try to address these issues for improving the quality of their products in the future.

Chessbazaar agents on here claim that whoever exposes the defects and shortcomings of their chess products is a bad person. In their mind the definition of ‘bad’ is ‘anyone who is bad for our business’. I do understand that sellers go out of their way to persuade and convince customers that their products are best quality and price. This is normal practice in the business world anyways. However, customers also have a voice and the right to review products. Naturally, Chessbazaar agents on here do not like critical reviews that expose the shortcomings of their products and they go out of their way to cover things up.

At first I was upset that the administration did not immediately ban this guy.  They had every right as his IP address is the same as he has been Ed banned at least 2 previous times with different handles and accounts.

Most recently I have seen the extreme humor in his existence on this forum.  He is so terribly wrong and extreme in the negative that it is funny.

With that though I do have him blocked so he cannot post in any threads I start.  Heck I am not a complete fool.

I wonder who he thinks are Chess Bazaar agents?  Of course, everyone is entitled to their thoughtful opinion of products whether that be praise or disdain, but something is afoot here.

In regard to this particular set from CB, I've offered a positive review for them having made a very good reproduction and pointed out some flaws where I thought they could have done better.  As a whole these chessmen are extremely well done as a reproduction, but not perfect by any means.  I ordered mine from the initial offering after it was announced and am well pleased with my purchase.  Does that make me an agent for CB?

I will continue to enjoy following forum threads that interest me, but wonder sometimes what motivates some to continue to denigrate a successful company that is filling a void.

If you don't like something, that's alright, but sometimes there are ulterior motives.

As long as the person who paid money for this set likes it,that should pretty much do it.It's a very nice set and you guys, who bought it,should enjoy it....As I'm sure you do.

Went with the buff finish. I wanted the semi vintage look ...

Bamboo58

They look great. They still have a polished finish.

For the antique sets, natural finish is my usual pick.

alleenkatze

Buff finish has a fine polish and I prefer over lacquered.

Bamboo58
