Pegged travel sets - quick question from anyone with experience

Hi all - I want to buy a travel set, and I want one with pegs and a board inside so that I can preserve a position. I don't understand those magnetic sets where the board is on the outside, meaning you have to put all the pieces carefully away everytime you want to close the set.

Anyway, I found one which looks perfect: http://www.houseofchess.com/travel-pegged-chess-set-inlaid-wood-top-board-inside-rosewood-maple-8inch-x-6inch.html

My question is: in your experience, do these types of pegged pieces have a 'snug' fit, or 'loose' fit? This matters because I don't want the pieces to fall out and go everywhere if I turn the set upside down. That's a big plus for magnetic sets - you can turn them up whichever way you want!

So, if anyone has had a pegged set like this, let me know what you think. If the pegged pieces have a tendency to fall out, I might just accept that I should buy a magnetic set.

Thanks!

John

The fit will probably vary slightly from piece to piece, and more, every time you move anything anywhere, it will loosen up slightly over time.  Even if it's pretty snug today, it won't be snug a year from now.  Temperature and humidity will affect this too.  What is tight in summer could be loose in winter.

In short, I think you'll be disappointed with how this performs over time.

Go magnetic. Have tried pegged sets, and end up losing some of the pieces.

Thanks both - will go magnetic in that case. Like the look of this thing: http://www.houseofchess.com/book-shape-travel-wood-magnetic-chess-set-9inch-x-7inch-golden-rosewood-maple.html

I have that chess set and I find two things that bother me with it.

1) The pawns are the same size as the rest of the pieces.  It just bothers me.

2) Some of the pieces fall out if if you turn it upside down or sideways.  The fit is loose and some just do that.  Mostly the pawns.  I have tried 3 different pegged sets and they are all pretty much the same.

I ended up with a magnetic "board inside" set and I really like it.  The only issue with it is that sometimes the pieces "cling" to each other when you try to move and you have to peel them off and return them to their proper position.

I've used this in the past http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00078MMR4?pc_redir=1401052836&robot_redir=1 Good magnets but the board is painted on and gets a little scratched by the magnets over time. great travel board though.

Thanks for the feedback - you've made my mind up, I will definitely go for a magnetic set with the board on the inside. Rather pieces that cling to each other (and the set itself!) than pieces that fall out and get lost.

Glad I could be of assistance.  I hope you get a nice set.
