Please recommend a beginner's chess set

Our house is littered with chess sets. The best kind for actual play is the classic Dragon Chess Set

in a hinged box. The box holds the pieces when closed, and forms the chessboard when open. I don't know why you are looking for a roll-up board.

The squares on the board should be at least 1.5 inches, the king about 3.25 inches tall. Bigger is better, I find miniature chess sets confusing.

Pieces may be plastic or wood, they are quite inexpensive. Try Walmart or ToysRUs.

“For Dummies” did a chess set for absolute beginners (who have never played the game before). The chessboard had starting piece placement and their respective move patterns printed on the board. Board and pieces were a decent size.

I used to have one and took it to a general games club (were they played various board games) to introduce people to chess.

I would recommend the following:

The PVC tournament board is a single-fold board. I like this board because it's easier to move if you want to preserve the position set up on the board. The squares are 2.25" which are the unofficial standard in the US. The green squares are ubiquitous in the US and provide nice contrast with a variety of piece colors.

I recommend the plastic pieces above as a compromise between rock-bottom cheap plastic sets and wood sets. Cheap plastic sets run $8-12 and cheap wood sets run about $50. All the sets above fall somewhere in between. Which set you choose is largely personal preference. I recall another message thread where the poster raved about the Marshall Series set.

I agree with the folding PVC vinyl folding boards. Any color of board is OK as long as you can contrast the squares with pieces. Yes even a black and buff can be used. I use a Red & Natural set on black & buff or white boards. All or most of the sets brother7 mentioned come in Red, Ivory, Black, Natural. So you can make a few combinations between colors of sets and boards. Here is another thing I would suggest. Get two or more sets. Give your sets rotation of use and they will last longer.

For the suggested board and sets. Go to wholesalechess.com They offer the same kinds of sets and boards as uscfsales.com has to offer but with cheaper shipping costs. Also they have a couple of entry level chess clocks that will not break the wallet.
