Please recommend, help to choose! Books of chess combinations !?

Sort:
ESP-918

At the moment I'm thinking about two books :

1st is - https://www.amazon.com/Chess-5334-Problems-Combinations-Games/dp/1579125549

It's quite cheap in Russia and easy to find (especially second hand ) , but things like mate in 1 I don't need and I've heard lots of problems rather composed, then taken from an actual games (which is not very good).

2nd book is - https://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Chess-Combinations-N-Kalinichenko/dp/5170213700

It's much harder to get in Russia and cost usually much higher, then a previous nominate. It gives 4000 chess combinations, which is pretty solid. Also I think it gives problems from an actual games  (I'm not sure tho).

3rd is - https://www.amazon.com/Enciklopedija-Sredisnica-Encyclopedia-Middlegames-Combinations/dp/B000J0IXXM

THIS same book but only in black

https://chessgod101.forumotion.net/t10398-encyclopaedia-of-chess-middlegames-combinations-sahovski-informator-1980

This one

About those two I have no idea what they are but I also can get one of this black version to be exact if I want it to in Russia.

So what do you think I should get?  Any better suggestions or recommendations maybe ?

ARenko

I'm not familiar with the Kalinichenko book.

The Polgar book is primarily made up of a lot of (often rather artificial) "mate in 1, 2, and 3 moves" type problems.  It is not a bad book, but I am not sure it is what you are looking for.

The black version of the Enciclopedia of Chess Middlegame Combinations is a very good book and the only tactics book I used when I was between 2000 and 2300 ELO.  I believe there are more recent editions of this book, but they may be more expensive.  Anyway, the black version is very good, and I would recommend it.

Are you interested only in books? I think those programs can be found as apps (Chess King) or CD’s (Convekta/Chessok) ...

The level of the books are so different that you cannot compare them.

1. Laszlo Polgar's "5334" is for beginners. It shows basic mating patterns over and over without a single explanation. You figure the pattern yourself, which makes it harder to forget.

2. Kallichenko's "Энциклопедия шахматных комбинаций" is a tough book but unfortunately it is a stolen work. He simply copied George Renko's "Intensive Course Tactics" Chessbase CD into print without informing the publisher. So he is in my black list along with Schiller and Keene (except for his Nimzowitch book). The content is very good (anything by Renko is worth the money) but he will never earn money from me.

3. This is the first edition; it is simply called the white book. There is no black version of it. The hardcover is black but its dusk jacket is white. It was printed in 1980 IIRC. The later editions were computer checked and more exercises were added so try to get one of those if you can but this one itself is also worth gold.

2 and 3 will make you work very hard. These are not starting books though; they are exercise books for very strong players. Studying these two is like banging my head on the wall; I feel good when I stop happy.png There are other nice tactics books which are both enjoyable and instructive.

Thank you for your time very good, professional answers.

I'm sorry to hear all that story about Kalinichenko, fortunately in Russia we have many more problems to care about, much bigger problems I would say , so I don't really care who did what as sad and igoistic as it sounds. All I care if this book is good(4000 combinations seems good) should be worth the $ ?  I need hard puzzles

What is the new edition?  Is it Encyclopedia of chess combinations 5th edition book or is it different book all together?

Books are much better ! More convenient too. Try taking your laptop around with everywhere you're going, plus look for charger socket , instead all I need is light and small handbag or backpack whatever...

Whatever you like. I personally would rather not carry laptops or books. An app is much less expensive than a book. With those savings, consider getting a smartphone, and you will have numerous chess books and apps instantly available to you in a very portable and light format.

All these courses (and many more) are available from ChessKing https://learn.chessking.com/  for any platform. I bought a Lifetime subscription for some 60 courses Web/Android/iOS for 8000 RUB. Then you can use it on any mobile device, IMO much better than a book.

Encyclopaedia of Chess Combinations is separate, 3 volumes cost 1400 RUB. I didn't buy it because their main 60 courses are enough for me for 10 years at least.

Yes, the 5th edition appears to be an updated and expanded version of the book I used.  Not a different book entirely, but probably a better edition if you can get your hands on it because there are more problems and the answers have been computer checked.

I agree with asdf234's comments above, and in particular comment no. 3 and the last paragraph.

Number 1 and 2 are for beginners. I consider 1980 Informator black edition as their best edition. I did not know white edition has same contents. Your 2000 chess.com rating is already very advanced I could not believe 1 & 2 as one of your options.

How much are you familiar with number 2?

StyleGiant

Number 2 is plagiarism of a Tactics CD.

dannyhume
How is such plagiarism allowed? And speaking of ChessBase CD’s, why doesn’t ChessBase offer their many courses as apps? Most people are going to buy an app over a CD, especially when you also factor in the cumbersome proprietary software garbage required to view ChessBase CD’s. ChessBase’s business rival, Chess Assistant, already has most of their training courses already made into Chess King apps for Android and iPhone. Could ask the same question for the Chess Steps Method.
StyleGiant

I'd rather buy chess books than an App.  Chess apps that you mentioned came from chess books isn't it? Plagiarism is not allowed. Number 2 was from a CD converted into a book without permission, so it was plagiarism.

dannyhume
Is there no international law against this kind of blatant plagiarism? Seems odd that the premiere chess software company of the world would allow a major rival to do this without retaliation.
StyleGiant

What I mean is I prefer the book form. Of course they are not stealing each other. You prefer apps and that is also very good.

dannyhume
That’s fine, yes, books are nice to have, also. I have a few of the more historical books (well, more modern reprints of them), that I hope to read someday.

I re-read your comments, since I may have misunderstood ... It sounds like somebody published a book that is entirely plagiarized from a CD, but then how does that publisher not get the crap sued out of them by the company that made the CD? (My apologies if I am still misunderstanding).

There was no major rival publisher in this story - Kalinichenko has published his plagiarized book with some small little known company.

I have exchanged few mails with George Renko in the past. Here's what he said about this:

"Nikolaj Kalinichenko from Russia stole my CD "Intensive Course Tactics" and published as a book under his name. ChessBase company has copyright on this CD but decided that it doesn't worth it to do anything in this regard."

As far a I know George Renko has published 5 CDs with ChessBase:

  • Intensive Chess Tactics
  • Intensive Chess Tactics 2
  • The Great ABC of Tactic
  • Killer Moves
  • Deadly Threats

They are all excellent. Unfortunately it looks like none of them is available for purchase anymore.
