Post your Chess Tables

Yes Mike, you're correct. I misremembered it's 3.5" not 3.75." To be completely honest, I've never actually measured the King (nor any of the other pieces for that matter).

@rcmac...

Thanks for the kind words. I did not have a speciality per se but my emphasis was in mathematics and protein chemistry (I did research in the enzyme kinetics of Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase) and I did my Comps in F1F0 ATP Synthase (an amazingly smart and efficient little molecule). Best wishes, John C.

This table I made myself from solid Black Walnut, Maple, White Oak and Purple Heart...2" squares and is here teamed with circa 1860 Jaques 3.75" Ebony/Boxwood pieces. I built it about 25 years ago in a former life as a cabinetmaker (before I went back to school to study Biochem).

Stunning! Would you please post more pictures? Many thanks!

Ummm, I think I need to upgrade mine..

Much to the dismay of the other half, I've been looking for a nice granite / marble chess table for the front room for a while now.  Two have appeared recently on a well know auction site, both for reasonable prices, both with the the wrong board orientation (or at least wrong for the direction from which I'd like to play).

It's a crying shame as I'm completely besotted with the one below:

Surely this must be a mistake, I mean, where would you put the chess clock?  Oh well, I suppose that I will have to learn to live with the fact that, just like Liv Tyler and Gwen Stefani before her, we were just not meant to be.

I had mine custom built; redgum with maple and walnut for the board. It does double duty as a dining table, which means there's plenty of room for coffee mugs, books, etc.

ollave, absolutely beautiful! Excellent craftmanship with superb solid wood and beautiful uncluttered clean lines.

The DIY board... did you put a clear coat on it after painting?

Beautiful table! Can you give us the dimensions of your table and the size of the board squares? And a close-up pic of the board?

strngdrvnthng

My guess would be: approximately six feet by three feet by a little under three feet tall. Judging from the space around the pieces I would hazzard a very rough guess at about two inch squares, perhaps a little larger. Just guessing for fun. My eye used to be pretty good, but like everything else it fades with lack of use. 😎

Very nice, indeed! Does the board reverse for dining? How big are the squares? I think we'd all like to see more pictures! Thanks!

K, absolutely. That has rubbed on satin polyurethane.

I agree with kenardi, a table that size is just what I need. Room for books, clocks, drinks, etc. All I have to do is find space for it. I like the high back chairs, too.

That just makes you want to feel sorry for the person that crafted that table... the moment they discovered the error, their heart must have sunk... all that work... it is a beuatiful table.  Obviously someone that does not play chess making chess equipment, it is a shame.

Here's some pics of a vintage circa 1950s Soviet Russian set on my chess table
