My favorite is the "Little Jewel" from Drueke.

Picked this up from local ad...7" magnetic set with easy  distinguishable pieces. In case someone is wondering, the setup of the pieces is a real match for title candidate wink.png

Oh wait, that Qd2 is not supposed to be there, it's on d1. This is me doing some simulation of what white will do.

TheOneCalledMichael

lol that was one of the simulation I've been doing happy.png

A perfect study set Michael.

I'm not one to know the names for the various styles of pieces that are seen in chess sets.  E.g. I happened to stumble on a listing on Amazon for "Bobby Fisher Ultimate" chess pieces and realized, "Hey, those are the pieces I really like that came in my tournament set from Excalibur!"   So I guess I know that name.  I've seen lots of variations on Staunton pieces, of course. And there are lots of various modern pieces, sets on a theme, etc.

But I'm wondering if there is a name for this style of pieces.  The pieces in this travel set (found at chesshouse.com) are Staunton looking, but because they are in a travel set their proportions are different.  They're short and stocky, kind of chunky.  I'd love to have these pieces paired with a clamshell style board that folds in half providing storage for the pieces within.  I can't seem to find these pieces anywhere but in this one set.  Do they have a specific style name?

This is one of the Chavet set I received this week. I have the box already some time ago, and this set fits perfectly in the box, so I have a backup board now happy.png

I picked up this during the week. I’ve given it a careful clean up but not much… it’s reasonably old and I don’t want take away the fingerprints of age … more just wiped some grime away, cleaned the plastic pieces and gave the little wooden board a refresh. It’s an ok piece  - perhaps  somewhere between the 1920-1950’s … I am not exactly sure but it has the markings: ILEX SERIES MADE IN ENGLAND - embossed on the box. I imagine, when new, the box may have been deep red leather or leatherette and gold embossed.

You're killing me Mark!wink

Thanks Magic but it’s nothing special. I imagine collecting chess pieces is pretty niche - for all the game’s current popularity - I think, with no evidence to back up my statement, that for most people its about playing, and mainly online. Only a relative few would care about old plastic pieces in a sh!tty old box… I paid the equivalent of an ok bottle of wine for this - but in truth, even that amount is too much - in retrospect, it’s a $5 bag of lollies but… I like the bag of lollies, I don’t buy to invest, I buy because I am enjoying creating a varied collection.

Well,to my tastes, chess sets of any ilk are objects of art.

An example of this type was shown already in someone else's post above, but the Jaques "In Statu Quo" type is IMHO the best travel chess set until today. I use it frequently when travelling and have several of these in various sizes, some with bone pieces, some with ivory pieces. They are all dating back to the 19th century.

I found this set in a small village in Luzern Switzerland. I like it very much!

Another custom commission… I dare anyone to post a smaller wooden set tongue

I found a small Metro Games New York genuine leather pocket chess set on a flea market in Brandenburg recently. It is no fit to preserve a given position, it does not close reliably and I already lost.. a spare pawn. It is a composite of at least two sets, apparently. But it looks very nice and plays fine- for use not on a carriage, rather on a park bench, I guess.

Does anybody have an idea from when it dates? Thank you!

(And is there a trick how to get the pix to turn out right)?
