West German weighted Set made by Leistung circa 1950s-60s. Kings measure 3.75" in height with the pawns at 1 7/8" in height. Lacquered pieces with the dark pieces stained in brown. The set features beautiful uniquely carved Knights, opposite color Bishop ball tip tops along with nicely turned Kings, Queens, Rooks and Pawns. .A very pleasing set for tournament use and a great set for analysis. Sets from the late 1960s and after replaced the great looking Knights of this set with the infamous "Chicken Head" Knights.

Mike - I'm pretty sure the manufacturer's name was not "Leistung". See the detailed comment I left in your Googleplus album...

Here is a very nice circa 1950s Golden Castle "Craftsman" black and natural lacquered Chess set with kings measuring 3.5" in height. These Japanese made sets were advertised in Chess Review magazines from the late 1950s up to the early 1960s. Sets were made with 3 different size kings: 3", 3.5" and 4". Set features nicely turned pieces with exquisite hand carve knights.

I have also seen a GoldenCastle plastic set on ebay once, so it is possible they created a mold of their turned wooden sets. These are so much nicer than anything Jaques was doing post war. Your set looks very nice. Hard to get too. I know, I've tried... :)

Frank, are you getting its confused with the plastic "Windsor Castle" sets offered on Ebay?

Thanks for the  translation Frank.  Maybe the manufacturer is Bohemia, a West German maker of similar sets.

I know the difference... :) It was a Japanese Golden Castle set made out of plastic for sure.

I love the vintage Jaques sets, especially the small club size!

According to previous owner, this is a circa 1870s Austrian Chess Set. This club size set comes with Kings measuring 4.5" in height and a 1 7/8" diameter base. The pieces are nicely turned with well carved Knights. This Ebony and Boxwood pieces are not weighted, surprising for a set of this quality.

Well, that's amazing. When was it offered on Ebay and what did it sell for?

What size King was it?

I wish I had taken a screenshot. The only thing I can find now is this:

Images are gone, and this is not the one I was looking at, but I'm pretty sure it is in reference to plastic pieces (see red/white reference).

Oh, so it was a travel set. I've seen these offered on Ebay, but the pieces were wood.

it wasn't a travel set. It was a plastic set w/ 3"k clearly molded after your set. Came in a box that had the same Golden Castle logo... Wish I could still find it...

How do you look for chess stuff on ebay ?  I have never tried ...

ROBB_CHESS

I love that Jol 1853... Noticed those old school flatish type base they use to do. Wish they still did them that way... Then... Add the patina they have and it is what Staunton is all about...
